A privately purchased vehicle is a vehicle purchased from a private seller. Heavy use vehicles purchased from a dealership, an auto auction, or leased from a carrier/through a leasing company are not considered privately owned vehicles.
You must file your Form 2290 for your privately owned vehicle within the deadline if you decide to operate the vehicle on the public highways to remain compliant with the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax.
The deadline to file Form 2290 for a privately purchased vehicle is the same as every other vehicle. The deadline to file your Form 2290 return is on the last day of the month following the First Used Month (FUM) of your vehicle.
If you purchase a vehicle from a seller who has already paid the HVUT of the vehicle for the tax year, and your first use is in the month of sale, your total HVUT for the tax period doesn’t include the tax for the month of sale.
For example, if you buy a truck in October 2024 and use it in the same month, your total HVUT will not include the tax for October. However, the deadline to file your Form 2290 return will be November 30, 2024.
However, the deadline to file your Form 2290 return will remain the same.
