How do I change the payment option after filing Form 2290?

Instantly file your heavy vehicle use tax form 2290 for the 2024-2025 tax year

Once you submit your Form 2290, you cannot change your payment method. However, the payment can be made using an alternate method depending upon the payment option chosen.

If you opt for Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW)
The payment method cannot be changed as the U.S. Department of Treasury will directly debit the amount from your account within 24 to 48 hours (1 or 2 days) once the return is processed.

If your EFW payment doesn’t go through, we recommend you contact the IRS and enquire about it. Alternatively, you can initiate your payment at www.EFTPS.gov or send the HVUT payment through Check or Money Order directly to the IRS.

If you choose the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS)
You can either make your payments by visiting www.EFTPS.gov or sending your HVUT amount through check or money order payable to the U.S. Department of Treasury. Mail a check with a voucher 2290-V to the following address:

Internal Revenue Service
P.O.Box 932500,
Louisville,
KY 40293-2500.

If you choose Check or Money Order
Similarly, if you choose Check or Money Order, you can send your HVUT amount through check or money order payable to the U.S. Department of Treasury. Mail a check with a voucher 2290-V to the following address:

Internal Revenue Service
P.O.Box 932500,
Louisville,
KY 40293-2500.

You can also make your payments through EFTPS by visiting www.EFTPS.gov.
