Did You Miss The Deadline? What Do You Do Now?

The deadline for the 2023-24 Form 2290 was August 31st. If you did not file by that date then your tax return is late and you will be issued hefty penalties from the IRS.

But don’t worry, you can still limit the damage!

We understand how busy truckers can get, and we are always here to help simplify e-filing Form 2290, regardless of when it is filed.

What Penalties Were Given?

If you missed the Form 2290 deadline, the IRS will place a penalty on your account. You will incur a penalty equal to 4.5% of the total tax amount of the HVUT payment.

This can be a large amount, depending on how much your HVUT payment is. The amount due for the HVUT depends on the gross taxable weight of the vehicle that is being filed.

When Should You File?

If your Form 2290 is late, the IRS already assigned penalties to you, but the sooner you file, the lower the damage.

These hefty penalties will continue to incur for every month that it is late. Even if you cannot make the HVUT payment yet, it is better and cheaper to at least have Form 2290 filed.

If your Form 2290 isn’t filed, you also won’t receive your stamped Schedule 1. Without a valid Schedule 1, you won’t be able to keep certain licenses up to date. This may cause your vehicle to become grounded, and no one wants that.

When you file with ExpresstruckTax, once your Form 2290 is accepted by the IRS, you will be sent your valid stamped Schedule 1.

File The Form 2290 Now and Not Later

Don’t let the penalties stack up! You can still file the Form 2290 now to avoid higher penalties!

New! Pay Your IRS Tax (HVUT) Directly Through ExpressTruckTax

ExpressTruckTax is excited to announce a new payment feature that makes it more convenient for filers to pay their Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes (HVUT). With this new feature, filers can pay their HVUT alongside filing their Form 2290 through ExpressTruckTax.

ExpressTruckTax, the market-leading Form 2290 e-filer offers a user-friendly solution to help truckers file their Form 2290 for the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax. Form 2290 is filed to the IRS by drivers of vehicles weighing 55,000 pounds or more. By using ExpressTruckTax, drivers are able to file their Form 2290 in only a few simple steps.

ExpressTruckTax not only makes filing Form 2290 easy but also offers filers convenient ways to pay their taxes for the HVUT to the IRS. In addition to the already established convenient payment methods including Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW), EFTPS, check or money order, and credit or debit card, ExpressTruckTax is excited to announce a new tax payment option now offered. Previously if filers wanted to pay via credit or debit card they would have to go to the IRS website and pay through an IRS-approved payment processor. This would require the filer to do extra steps on a different website to actually pay the tax. Truckers would need to enter in all of their information a second time which took extra time. Because this was an extra step that needed to be completed by filers, some would say they would pay later and end up forgetting to pay at all. This would cause drivers to be fined for being late with their tax payments. The IRS payment processors also have additional fees charged for using this service.

To ensure that drivers pay their tax on time, and not get fined, ExpressTruckTax now offers the option for drivers to pay their HVUT directly from ExpressTruckTax. Instead of having to complete the extra steps involved with paying through an IRS payment processor, filers can pay for the Form 2290 filing fee and their HVUT taxes all at the same time. When utilizing this option, there is a bank processing fee that is applied upon payment. Once the driver pays through ExpressTruckTax, the tax form and payment are submitted at the same time and filers will no longer have to worry about going to an external site and entering all of their information again or forgetting to pay altogether.

Paying through ExpressTruckTax saves drivers time and money. This new payment method offers a one-stop solution so that the filing and the payment are submitted at the same time and drivers can get back on the road without stressing over being late with their filing or tax payment. Truckers, what are you waiting for? Visit ExpressTruckTax and get your filing and tax payment out of the way today!

¡Nuevo!

Did You Receive an IRS Letter About Non-Payment?

Historically, the IRS tends to send non-payment letters before the Form 2290 payment deadline of August 31st.  However, this year, the IRS deployed a program change that delayed the posting of Form 2290 to help eliminate non-payment letters

This letter says that you failed to make your HVUT payment and gives instructions on how to submit payment.

How Can You Check To Make Sure The Payment Was Made and What Should You Do If You Have Proof Of Payment?

ExpressTruckTax encourages you to check the account you chose to make the IRS tax payment with (EFW, EFTPS, Credit/Debit, or Check/Money Order) to make sure the HVUT payment was successfully debited. If you do not remember what method of IRS tax payment you chose, you can log into your ExpressTruckTax.com account and see the method you chose on your Dashboard.

You can also click the return number to see more information about your IRS payment method selection:

If you check your account and the US Treasury debited the tax payment, you should receive another letter from the IRS within the next few weeks that shows a zero balance.

If you continue to receive IRS non-payment notices, it’s best to contact the IRS directly using the phone number located on the top right corner of the first page of the notice (800.829.0115). When you speak with the IRS agent, you want to ask them if the payment you made has been applied to the correct tax year and tax form (Form 2290).

I Checked My Account And The IRS Tax Payment Was Not Debited. What Do I Need To Do Now?

If you checked the account you chose to make the IRS tax payment (EFW, EFTPS, Credit/Debit, or Check/Money Order) and the tax payment has not been debited, you simply need to follow the instructions on the IRS notice and submit payment as soon as possible.

If you have further questions regarding IRS Form 2290 tax payments, please contact the IRS directly at 800.829.0115.

Did You Forget To Make The HVUT Payment?

The 2021-22 Form 2290 tax season has come to an end. Your Form 2290 and HVUT payment needed to be sent to the IRS before the August 31st deadline.

If you filed the Form 2290 on time and sent your HVUT payment to the IRS  before the deadline,  then congratulations! You’re all done for this year!

But when you filed the Form 2290, did you also remember to go make your payment separately to the IRS? If not, it is important to make the payment as soon as you can in order to avoid further unwanted penalties.

What Happens If The Payment Is Late?

If your HVUT payment is late, then the IRS will be issuing penalties. Your HVUT payment needed to be made or sent out by the end of the day on August 31st to be considered “on-time”.

But luckily, as long as you filed your Form 2290 on time, the penalties for a late HVUT payment won’t be as high. However, it is still important to make your payment as soon as possible.

The longer you wait to make the payment, the higher the penalties will be, and no one wants to pay more than they have to!

How To Make The Payment

When you filed the Form 2290, there was a section where you chose which payment method you intended to make the payment with.

Here are the different payment options that the HVUT payment can be made with:

  • Debit and Credit Card- to make your HVUT payment using your debit/credit cards, you must make your payment at IRS.Gov/PayUsingCard
  • Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW)– a bank account transfer. Your bank account and routing numbers are required and the payment will be withdrawn automatically within 1 or 2 business days
  • Electronic Federal Tax Payment Systems (EFTPS) The IRS offers this payment method to simplify tax payments. You will have to create an account here and enroll in the program.
  • Check or Money Order You will have to mail out your check or money order for this option. You will also have to include the Form 2290-V along with the payment. Mail it to the following address:

On top of this penalty, you also won’t have a valid stamped Schedule 1 for the 2021-22 tax year. Without this stamped Schedule 1, you will not be able to renew and stay up to date on most licenses. This can cause your vehicle to be grounded, so it’s important to file on time!
