Start Reporting Your Second Quarter 2022 IFTA With TruckLogics Now

The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is required to be filed if a vehicle meets the following requirements:

  1. it weighs 26,000 pounds or more
  2. has three or more axles
  3. travels through two or more jurisdictions

This agreement was made with the United States (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) and ten of the Canadian provinces. It is designed so that truck drivers can report fuel purchased in each state to their base jurisdiction and that jurisdiction is responsible for distributing the taxes to each state where the fuel was purchased in. 

IFTA is a tax that is reported quarterly and the time frame of each quarter is as follows:

Quarter 1: January 1 – March 31
Quarter 2: April 1 – June 30
Quarter 3: July 1 –  September 30
Quarter 4: October 1 – December 31

The deadline to file IFTA for each quarter is as follows (If the deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline will be moved to the next business day):

Quarter 1: April 30 (May 2, 2022)
Quarter 2: July 31 (August 1, 2022)
Quarter 3: October 31
Quarter 1: January 31

You can officially start reporting IFTA for the Second Quarter 2022 starting in July. For this quarter you will need to create a report with the miles traveled and fuel purchased in each jurisdiction between April 1st and June 30th, 2022. The deadline to file this report with your base jurisdiction is on August 1st, 2022 because July 31st, 2022 falls on a weekend this year. 

In order to make sure that you create your report correctly with all of the necessary information, our sister product TruckLogics offers a simple easy-to-use IFTA reporting solution! From there you will click Add Fuel Expense and enter your fuel expenses.

Once they are added you will click on the IFTA tab.

From here you will generate an IFTA report for the appropriate quarter.

GATS 2019 Trending Topics: AI in the World of Trucking

It’s no secret that AI is continuing to grow in today’s world.

With the rise of artificial intelligence comes the confusion and uncertainty that accompanies any unknown territory.

Because of that, this topic was a big focus for truck drivers at the Great American Trucking Show (GATS) this year.

If you couldn’t make GATS 2019, here’s what you missed regarding artificial intelligence in the world of trucking.

GATS 2019

AI continues to be a big topic at GATS, with updates on how trucking technology will continue to affect American truck drivers.

Most of the fear surrounding AI comes with self-driving trucks, but those are still in their infancy.

More immediately, AI is making a positive impact on the trucking industry by increasing efficiency on the back end.

AI is also a great tool for decreasing error. Matt Bernstein, CEO of HubTran, points out, “Whenever you have manual processes, no matter how many checkers there are, there will be errors.”

Artificial intelligence plays a big role in reducing those errors for truck drivers.

GATS 2019 hosted a variety of different educational sessions addressing artificial intelligence, including a session titled “The Driver’s Role with Driverless Trucks”, featuring Pronto and Starsky Robotics.

Pronto brings to market safety systems designed for commercial trucking fleets.

Their Copilot products offer advanced adaptive cruise control, electronic steering and collision mitigation, and other innovative safety measures.

Starsky Robotics also works on autonomous strategies and has created technology that will handle the highway miles for commercial vehicles.

Trucking Technology

A report by MarketsandMarkets estimates that the AI market for transportation is projected to grow nearly 18% from 2017 – 2030.

With the rise of AI comes an increase in value for human skills.

GATS 2019 also focused on adding increased value and attention to things that are uniquely human.

As more jobs or activities become automated, people are freed from routine and predictable tasks.

Instead, they are challenged to manage new technologies and exercise greater critical thinking skills on a regular basis.

The Great American Truck Show hosted educational sessions focusing on the importance of these skills as well.

Growing AI in the trucking industry means continuing to grow human skills.
These skills include communication, empathy, trust, and judgment.

And don’t forget the IRS e-file blackout will still be going on this long weekend as well. We now have an estimated end time for the blackout from the IRS of January 11th. The bottom line on the blackout is that you can still prepare your Form 2290 with us, and as soon as the IRS notifies us the e-file system is back up we’ll e-file your return. We’ll get your stamped Schedule 1 to you within minutes of the blackout’s end.

Introducing the VolvoBeeVan, a somewhat miniature big rig that placed the driver at the center of the vehicle. 

The way Volvo designed this rig, the driver sits front and center. That means way more visibility and a much better view of the road. And it’s safety features are basically off the charts!

When a driver exits their vehicle, the doors slide open and reveal hidden steps that will help them to get their feed on the ground safely. Then inside the cab, the truck is insulated to shield the driver from the outside environment.

And it also includes a sleeper, dinette table, and some spacious personal storage. For Volvo’s new concept vehicle, the driver is the main concern and everything is done for their comfort and safety.

Truck Accessories

Since semi-trucks are so large, being able to see behind the trailer is often a difficult task. But Hawkeye has a solution for that: their wireless backup camera. 

 

They’ve been putting backup cameras on cars for ages, so why not trucks? It can help truckers visualize the great unknown (behind their trailer) much better than their large mirrors ever could.

The display is three inches high and it isn’t very invasive, especially in a big rig with a large cabin. And it’ll improve the safety of your vehicle!
