Save Money On Your Form 2290

You know what’s a good practice in the trucking industry? Penny-pinching! Saving anywhere you can really help out in the long run, and can actually make or break fleets trying to emerge into the market. Unfortunately, with the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) Form 2290 deadline you’ll have to pay the amount you owe or face hefty penalties. But don’t worry, we know a few ways to save on your HVUT.

Use These Tips To Save On Your 2290:

1. Take Advantage of Our Wallet Feature

Before filing your HVUT Form 2290 see how many forms you actually need to file because with ExpressTruckTax you can purchase prepaid credits through their exclusive wallet feature. Each credit provides a 10% discount off of your filing fee, so the more credits you buy, the more you save. Don’t worry about purchasing more credits than you need, because they never expire and can be used next season.

The credits save you time and money because instead of having to hunt down your wallet and enter in all of your card information, you can conveniently use your prepaid credit to pay for your form.

To purchase prepaid credits log into your free ExpressTruckTax account and you’ll see your wallet in the top right corner. Click the orange ‘Buy’ button to purchase the number of credits you need.

2. Get A Refund Or Credit With Form 8849

After you file Form 2290 and pay the amount of HVUT that you owe you can file Form 8849, the Refund or Claim of Excise taxes form, which is used to claim refunds or credits on suspended vehicles and vehicles that were sold, stolen, or destroyed.

Suspended or credit vehicles are vehicles that don’t exceed 5,000 miles (7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles) during the current tax period.

While filing your Form 2290 with ExpressTruckTax if your credit vehicles exceed the amount of HVUT you owe then Form 8849 will automatically be generated for you, and all you need to file is your name, address, and EIN. You’ll also need the information for your vehicle that you’re claiming a refund on, including details as to why, if your vehicle was lost, stolen, or destroyed, and the date that the incident occurred.

3. Avoid Penalties By Filing on Time

If you file late you could face a penalty of 4.5% of the tax due. To make matters worse that amount collects on a monthly basis for up to 5 months! Also, if you don’t pay the amount you owe then you’ll face another penalty of 0.5% of the amount owed per month. You’ll really save by filing on on time.

If you wait until just days before the deadline you could run into a problem that causes your form to be rejected and then counted as late if you can’t fix it by the deadline. For example, if you enter the wrong VIN or Vehicle Identification Number, or wait too late to apply for an EIN or Employer Identification Number your form could get rejected.

Luckily ExpressTruckTax makes it easy to fix any mistakes. If your form is rejected you’ll be notified almost immediately with notes as to why. Then you can easily make Form 2290 amendments, retransmit your forms to the IRS, and make free VIN corrections at any time. The sooner your pre-file, the sooner you’ll learn if your form has been rejected or accepted.

How To Pre-file?

You can create your free ExpressTruckTax account to access our step-by-step 2290 e-filing guide to complete your form in a matter of minutes today. 2290s And EINs: Everything You Need To Know

The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax season is coming right at us at full speed! You can try to jump out of the way, but you’ll still need to file your Form 2290 by the August 31st deadline. Don’t let the deadline run you over. Be prepared and file as soon as possible to avoid having your form rejected. For example, it’s very important to know that you’re required to have an EIN.

What to Remember About Your EIN?

Your EIN or your Employer Identification Number is also known as the Federal Tax Identification Number and the Federal Employer Identification Number or FEIN. EINs are assigned to businesses operating in the United States in order to identify them for tax reporting purposes. Each EIN consists of a unique 9 digit number.

This is important because you are required by the IRS to have an EIN to complete your 2290. They need it to identify you to correctly verify that you’re filing for yourself and to prevent fraud.

There may be some confusion when it comes to EINs and Social Security Numbers (SSN) because they’re both 9 digit identification codes. However, EINs are used to identify businesses, and social security numbers are used to identify individuals. Also, the IRS used to accept SSNs in place of EINs on Form 2290s, but that is no longer the case. If you use your SSN in the EIN field your form will be rejected.

Also, when it comes to the information on your 2290 such as your business name and address, it will need to match what the IRS has on file or it could be rejected. You can see if your information matches what the IRS has on file by contacting the IRS directly at (800) 829-4933.

If you don’t have an EIN you can apply for online for free with the IRS here. Once you finish applying you will instantly receive your 9 digit EIN, but please keep in mind that it will take about 15 days for your EIN to update in the IRS’s system and your 2290 could be rejected during this time.

Each EIN is is a unique code that never expires. However, as a sole proprietor you may need a new EIN if you’re subject to a bankruptcy proceeding, you incorporate, you take in new partners and operate as a partnership, or you purchase or inherit an existing business.

How To File Your 2290?

Why wait when you can go ahead and knock out your 2290 today? Go ahead and file online with ExpressTruckTax or the ExpressTruckTax App now. Simply follow the step-by-step filing guide to instantly complete your form. As a result, your Form 2290 will be transmitted directly to the IRS and you’ll get your stamped Schedule 1 in about 15 minutes.

You can also call TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 to file your Form 2290 today over the phone. Simply give them a call and an outstanding US-based representative will file your 2290 for you! It’s that easy. Plus, you will instantly get a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email.

How Does Form 8849 Effect My 2290?

Alright, 2290 season is coming, and along with your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) comes a lot of questions and sometimes a little confusion. Sometimes while filing your Form 2290 you might see information about Form 8849, but what’s that? Do you need to be concerned with it? Today we’re here with the 8849 facts to answer your questions.

Form 8849

Form 8849 is the Claim or Refund of Excise Taxes Form. Excise taxes are the taxes paid on goods when they’re purchased and they’re often included in the price. An example of one of these goods is gasoline, hints your IFTA tax. Also, excise taxes include activities, such as highway usage by trucks.

Highway usage?! Now that might ring a bell because if you drive a qualifying vehicle of 55,000 pounds or more then you are required to file Form 2290 in order to get a copy of your stamped Schedule 1.

After filing your Form 2290 you can File Form 8849 to claim a credit or a refund on the amount of  HVUT paid. Anyone can file this form if they need to claim a refund or a credit.

You can claim credits or refunds for vehicles that were stolen, sold, or destroyed. You can also claim credits for vehicles that were only used for 5,000 miles or less on public highways and 7,500 miles or less for agricultural vehicles used during the tax period.

Just remember, before you can File Form 8849 you need to file your Form 2290 and pay any Heavy Vehicle Taxes owed to the IRS for the current tax season first.

All you need to File Form 8849 is your name, EIN, and address, but it needs to match what the IRS has on file. You can verify your information by calling the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040.

If you’ve already filed your 2290 then you should already have your Employee Identification Number, as the IRS requires you to have one to complete your return.

If you haven’t filed your 2290 and you need an EIN you can apply for one online with the IRS. It will take about 15 days for the EIN to become active if the e-filing system and forms may be rejected during that time.

Also, you will need the information for the vehicle that you’re claiming a refund for with details as to why you’re claiming a credit or refund, such as if it was stolen, sold, or destroyed with the date that the incident occurred.

Pre-File With TSNAmerica

The faster you pre-file your Form 2290 then the faster you can claim a refund or credit with Form 8849. Call our sister company TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 and they’ll file your Form 2290 for you over the phone. Your return will be transmitted to the IRS on July 1st unless you would like it sent at a later date. The process is as easy as making a simple phone call.

5 Common HVUT E-Filing Mistakes

Taxes are already confusing enough. You have to know what form to file, when to file, how to file, and more. To make matters worse even if you file your form on time, it can still be rejected for simple mistakes! Then you have to go through the process of correcting your form.

Even though ExpressTruckTax has made that e-filing process and amendment process incredibly easy, with the HVUT season approaching, we want your form to get accepted the first time! So, check out these common HVUT mistakes to avoid!

Common HVUT Mistakes To Avoid

1. Entering Your VIN Incorrectly. Slow down, you need to make sure that all of your information gets entered correctly. Vehicle Identification Numbers consist of 17 characters that include both numbers and letters, so they can easily get mixed up.

Plus, VINs have incredibly small print. We often find ourselves squinting to reference our own! It might be hard to see if something is a 1 or an I, or a 0 or an O, so bust out your glasses to take a really good, close look at your VIN. After you enter it on your form double check it to makes sure that it’s correct.

2. Waiting too long to get your EIN. Sometimes people don’t realize that they need an EIN or Federal Tax Identification Number to file their 2290. Your EIN also serves as your Employment Identification Number.

You can apply for an EIN with the IRS directly, but keep in mind that it takes at least 15 days for your EIN to be added to the system. So, if you file your 2290 and apply for your EIN too close to the deadline, then your form could be rejected. If you need an EIN don’t wait til the last minute!

Some people ignore the fact that they need an EIN and put their SSN number in the field. The IRS no longer accepts Social Security Numbers in place of EINs!

3. Mismatching mistakes. Keep in mind that your business name, address, and EIN has to match what the IRS has on file. You can call the IRS directly to verify your information.

4. Don’t enter the wrong tax year. It’s really easy to put the wrong year on checks, dates, important forms, and more! While you can e-file for 2290’s for previous years, if you want to file for the current tax year, which is July 2016 – June 2017, make sure you have those dates correctly selected.

5. Filing is put off until the last minute. No one wants to deal with taxes, so they wait as long as they can to file them, which usually results in filing too late or finding out that your form needs corrections that you don’t have enough time to make before the deadline.

However, in reality, it’s extremely easy to e-file Form 2290. With ExpressTruckTax you can follow the step-by-step guide to easily handle your HVUT in a matter of minutes and receive your stamped Schedule 1 via email almost instantly.

You don’t even need a computer to file. Download the free ExpressTruckTax app to any iOS or Android Device to quickly and easily e-file your 2290 at any time, from any location. This makes it super easy to file even while you’re out on the road.

But wait, you don’t even have to wait! Go ahead and take care of your HVUT today by calling our sister company TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320 to pre-file over the phone today. All you have to do is call them, and they’ll file your Form 2290 for you, and transmit it the IRS on July 1st! As soon as the IRS stamps your Schedule 1 you’ll receive it via email!

Your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax or HVUT Form 2290 needs to be annually filed by August 31st. Meaning that if you first use your new vehicle in April then your HVUT is due by May 31st.

You’re subject to the HVUT if you own a taxable highway motor vehicle that has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. A highway motor vehicle is any vehicle that’s self-propelled and designed to carry loads over public highways or the perform other functions. The vehicle weight includes the chassis, but not the load.

  • Direct Debit or Electronic Funds Withdrawal
  • Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS)
  • Check or Money Order

Step 6: Summary and Audit Check

Before we transmit your 2290, we’ll check over your form to make sure it’s clear of any basic filing errors.

We can’t guarantee that you won’t be audited, but we can do our best to make sure nothing looks funky before we transmit!

Step 7: Transmit Your Return to the IRS

At this point, your return is ready to be transmitted to the IRS. Simply add your electronic signature and voila! We can transmit, and you’re done with Form 2290 Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return for the year!

Step 8: Receive Your Stamped Schedule 1

Want to know the best part? Shortly after you file, you’ll get your 2290 Schedule 1. That’s not bad!
