IRS extended E-File Deadline for Form 2290

If you missed the Form 2290 deadline on Saturday, August 31, 2013, you are in luck because the IRS extended the E-Filing deadline until today, September 3, 2013 due to their planned maintenance over the Labor Day weekend.

That means you can still file on time as long as you E-File (the paper return deadline was NOT extended).  If you intended on paper filing but missed the deadline, you will need to E-File instead to avoid possible IRS penalties.

Simply go to  ExpressTruckTax.com and setup your account.  You will be prompted to enter your business details, including EIN, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), and Gross Weight of the Vehicle (Combined with maximum load).  You will be able to choose your IRS payment option, either Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFT), Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) or Check/Money Order.  Once the return is complete you will be prompted to transmit the return.

Normally you receive your Schedule 1 within minutes, but due to the IRS Maintenance, you will not receive your Schedule 1 until after the IRS resumes normal business activity after noon on today, September 3, 2013.

To get started today, visit ExpressTruckTax.com or contact our Express Tax Support Center in Rock Hill, SC at 704-234-6005 or email us at support@ExpressTruckTax.com.  We have Spanish Support too!

Choose an IRS payment option:
There are several options to pay the HVUT taxes with the IRS.
  • Electronic Funds Withdrawal, or Direct Debit: The IRS will collect the taxes due after they are provided with a bank account number and routing number
  • EFTPS: You have to schedule the payment to the IRS by going to EFTPS.gov.
  • Check/Money Order

We strongly advise our Canadian customers to use this option as EFW may not work for Canadian banks.

Just a reminder, if you choose Direct Debit (EFW) as a payment method, the IRS will not process your return during the weekends, or on federal holidays, but on the next business day.

Review Tax ID Numbers
Carefully check Tax Identification numbers on your return.

Review Your Return
Expresstrucktax.com is a very smart program, it automatically checks for any errors before you transmit your 2290 return to IRS, but it’s always good to double check everything before you hit the ‘Transmit to IRS’ button.

Penalties For Not Filing Form 2290 HVUT

The heavy vehicle use tax or HVUT is a fee assessed annually on heavy vehicles operating on public highways at registered gross weights equal to or exceeding 55,000 pounds. The current tax period is July 1, 2013-June 30, 2013.  The annual deadline to file for all vehicles is August 31st, but since the 31st is on a Saturday and Monday is Labor Day, the deadline has been extended to Tuesday, September 3, 2013.

The penalty for not filing the IRS Form 2290 by the deadline is equal to 4.5% of total tax due.  This amount is assessed on a monthly basis up to five months. Those who choose not to make their HVUT payment also face an additional monthly 0.5% of the tax due penalty. Additional interest charges of 0.54% per month accrue as well. Within 5 months of not filing and paying the HVUT tax, the HVUT liability that was originally $550 will be over $700.  In addition to the monetary federal penalties, states suspend the registrations of vehicles for which proof of HVUT payment has not been provided. So not only will the taxpayer owe more money, they will also be unable to renew their registrations, so they will be unable to work. HVUT evasion penalties can even be as severe as fines and incarceration.

There are a few instances where a vehicle is exempt from paying the HVUT tax, even if most of those instances, a Form 2290 is required to be filed even if no tax is due.  You can find detailed information on the IRS site at The Trucking Tax Center.

You can E-File your Form 2290 quickly and easily at ExpressTruckTax.com and receive your Schedule 1 within minutes.  Your Schedule 1 serves as proof of payment for your HVUT.  For more information or to get started today, visit ExpressTruckTax.com or contact our Express Tax Support Center in Rock Hill, SC at 704-234-6005 or email us at support@ExpressTruckTax.com.  We have Spanish Support too!
