What Is The Best Way To File Your Form 2290?

The 2021-22 tax season is here and it’s time to file your Form 2290! The deadline to file is August 31st, 2021!

Don’t wait until the last minute! File now to avoid penalties and receive your stamped Schedule 1 within minutes!

But you may be wondering: “What is the best way to file my Form 2290?” There are multiple options to choose from when filing your Form 2290, but some are quicker and more convenient than others!

Filing By Mail

If you file by paper, you will have to mail the Form directly to the IRS, and there will be delays in the processing of your Form 2290.

The IRS sent out a postcard this year explaining that they suggest truckers file electronically rather than on paper. This is because the IRS is facing backlogs due to COVID that may delay the processing of Form 2290 and sending the stamped Schedule 1 back in a timely manner.

The IRS back up, along with staff shortages, may cause a delay in receiving your stamped Schedule 1 by months!

We suggest that all truckers should e-file their Form 2290s in order to speed up the process and so you won’t face delays on your stamped Schedule 1.

E-Filing with ExpressTruckTax

With over ten years of experience, ExpressTruckTax is the leading IRS-Authorized E-File provider for Form 2290.

When you e-file your Form 2290, it will only take a few minutes to receive your stamped Schedule 1. As soon as the IRS accepts your Form 2290, ExpressTruckTax will send your stamped Schedule 1 through email or fax.

ExpressTruckTax offers multiple features that are included with the low price of $9.90 for a single truck. We offer Free VIN corrections, a Free Mobile app, Bulk Information Upload, Instant Error Checks, and much more.

On top of all that, ExpressTruckTax also offers the ExpressGuarantee, which is our way of thanking truckers and presenting our dedication to working closely with every client. The ExpressGuarantee ensures that, if your Form 2290 is rejected by the IRS with any reason, ExpressTrucktax’s US-based support team will work continuously with you until the return is accepted, and you will never be charged for any retransmissions of the return.

If the return is still not accepted for any reason, ExpressTruckTax will give you your money back – no questions asked.

Don’t Wait! Why You Should File Your Form 2290 Now And Not Later

August is only a few days away, which means the Form 2290 deadline is only a month away!

You may be thinking that a month is more than enough time to file and pay your tax return, but why risk it? No one wants to deal with penalties and additional charges.

Although e-filing your Form 2290 can be a relatively quick process for some, that may not always be the case. One simple mistake could cause the return to be rejected by the IRS, and if you didn’t file ahead of time, it may delay the processing long enough to have to face these unwanted penalties.

As Long As I File Before The Due Date, I Won’t Have Penalties?

Maybe, Maybe not.

If your information is correct and your HVUT payment goes through, then yes. But, if the form is rejected or the payment isn’t able to be withdrawn in time, then you will still face penalties.

So is waiting until the last minute really worth that risk?

What Will Cause My Form 2290 To Be Rejected?

There could be many reasons why your Form 2290 could end up rejected. Some of the most common errors found on Form 2290s include inputting an incorrect Routing Transmit number, an EIN and Business name that do not match, and already having a duplicate accepted return.

If the IRS does reject your form, ExpressTruckTax will send you an email explaining why the Form was not accepted. This email will also explain the exact step-by-step process on how to fix the error.

Once you address and correct the error, ExpressTruckTax allows you to resubmit your IRS Form 2290 as many times as needed until it is accepted, at no additional charge.

What Penalties Will You Face If Your Form 2290 Isn’t Processed And Paid Before The Deadline?

No one wants to pay penalties with their hard-earned money, especially when these fines could have easily been avoided.

If your Form 2290 is not processed by the IRS, and they do not receive your payment on time, be prepared to find yourself face-to-face with high penalties and interests.

Late Form 2290 Penalties and Interest

  • You will receive a penalty of 4.5% of the total tax amount due. This will be assessed monthly for up to 5 months if the Form 2290 is not filed within the given deadline.
  • If your HVUT was underpaid, a monthly penalty of .5% will be charged from the total tax due as a result of the underpayment.
  • An additional interest charge of .54% will be accrued per month.

If your Form 2290 or payment is late, the IRS will send you a letter to notify you about the return and the penalties.

Don’t Risk It! File Your Form 2290 Today!

If you want the peace of mind that your Form 2290 is filed, accepted, and paid, then it’s important to file as soon as possible! That way, you won’t have to worry about penalties!

This year’s tax season deadline is August 31st! File your Form 2290 now with ExpressTruckTax and receive your stamped Schedule 1 within minutes.

E-Filing Form 2290 vs Making Your HVUT Payment

So you filed your Form 2290 and received your stamped Schedule 1? That’s great!…. but unfortunately you’re not done quite yet.

It is now time to pay the IRS the tax due on your vehicles. You can only make your HVUT payment after your Form 2290 was completed and accepted by the IRS. Filing and paying your HVUT are two different processes, so It’s important that you complete both of them before the deadline.

When is the Form 2290 due date and when do you have to Pay?

Both the Form 2290 and your HVUT payment are due by the same date, which is determined by your first used month. If you have a vehicle that was used for the first time during the tax year (bought new or used vehicle, etc) then the due date to file and pay would be the end of the following month of first use.

If the truck has been in use since the last tax year, then your due date will be on August 31st!

Even though the filing and payment are due on the same day, it is important that you don’t wait to file and pay. Your Form 2290 must be accepted before the payment is made or the IRS will not be able to process your payment.

Some payment options take a few days or weeks to be sent and accepted by the IRS. Even if the payment is sent on time, if it is not in the IRS’s hands by the end of the due date, then your HVUT will be considered late and penalties will be involved.

File now to ensure that your Form 2290 will be accepted and that, regardless of the method you choose to make the payment, your HVUT will be received at the IRS on time.

How To Pay Your HVUT to the IRS?

The IRS offers multiple options to make your HVUT payment. It’s important that you understand all these options so you can best determine which form of payment is the best option for you.

  • Debit and Credit Card- to make your HVUT payment using your debit and credit cards, you must make your payment at IRS.Gov/PayUsingCard
  • Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW)– a standard bank account transfer. You will need to provide your bank account and routing numbers to the IRS. The payment will be withdrawn within 1 or 2 business days
  • Electronic Federal Tax Payment Systems (EFTPS) a service that the IRS offers to simplify tax payments. You will have to create an account here and enroll in the program.
  • Check or Money Order If you choose this option, you will have to remember to mail out your check or money order before the HVUT payment due date. You will also have to include the Form 2290-V along with the payment. Mail it to the following address:

Once you submit your Form 2290, the payment method that you checked can be changed, unless you picked the EFW option. So, before you submit your tax return, make sure the payment option that you picked is the one you’re committed to using.

Why Can’t You Pay the IRS Through ExpressTruckTax?

The HVUT payment must be paid directly to the IRS. ExpressTruckTax does not initiate any of the HVUT payments and cannot accept the tax money.

When you pay on ExpressTruckTax, you are only paying for the filing fees, not the actual payment. It is important to remember that, even though you received your stamped Schedule 1, you still need to complete the next step and send out your payment to the IRS.

Everything You Need To Know About Your Stamped Schedule 1!

The 2021-22 tax season is here and the deadline will be here soon!

Right now, your 2020-21 stamped Schedule 1 is expired! It’s important that you file  a Form 2290 for the current tax season Form 2290 to receive your new Schedule 1.

What is a stamped Schedule 1?

A stamped Schedule 1 is proof of filing for your Form 2290.

The Form 2290 must be filed every year to the IRS in order to make your HVUT payment.

The stamped Schedule 1 that you receive will contain an IRS e-file watermark with the date the return was received and processed along with the information you entered on the Form 2290.

Once the IRS accepts your 2021-22 tax return, you will be sent a stamped Schedule 1, which will expire at the start of the next tax season. You must file the Form 2290 every year to renew your stamped Schedule 1.

It’s important that the Schedule 1 is stamped because it contains a unique watermark to show that the form is authentic. Without the stamp, the DMV will not accept this document.

Why do you need a stamped Schedule 1?

It’s very important for truckers to have a valid stamped Schedule 1 issued to them!

Trucks must present the stamped Schedule 1  in order to renew their tags, register their vehicles at the DMV, and to legally be able to operate their vehicles on any public highways.

How do you receive your stamped Schedule 1?

How you receive your stamped Schedule 1 is determined by how you file.

When you e-file with ExpressTruckTax, you will receive the stamped Schedule 1 back within minutes. The Schedule 1 will be sent to you through email as soon as the IRS accepts your return. If you don’t want to receive the Schedule 1 through email, you have the option to receive it through fax or by mail.

If you file your Form 2290 by mail, it may take between 4-6 weeks to receive the stamped Schedule 1. This isn’t a great option when your current Schedule 1 is already expired!

Receive your Schedule 1 Today!

The 2021-22 tax season is here and your Form 2290, along with payment, is due August 31st!

Form 2290 Amendments: What Are They And How Do You File?

Now that the 2021-22 tax season is here, it’s time to file your Form 2290! Getting all your information together and filling it in correctly can be a hassle, especially when you’re in a hurry.

We understand that people make mistakes, so ExpressTruckTax offers amendments for the Form 2290, just in case a mistake is made!

Why File an Amendment?

If you made a mistake on your Form 2290, then it is important to file an amendment in order to fix the mistake made.

By filing an amendment, you won’t have to fill out and submit a whole new Form 2290. Amendments are quick and easy to submit to the IRS compared to having to file a whole new Form 2290.

After you make a mistake or need to update your information on the Form 2290, check the list of amendments that are offered before starting a new Form 2290.This could save you a lot of time and money!

What Amendments does ExpressTruckTax offer?

There are 3 different amendments thats you can file for your Form 2290:

  1. Vin Correction

Your Vin (Vehicle Identification Number) is a unique 17 character identification sequence, so it’s easy to make a mistake and mess up a digit or two. If this happens, it’s important that you file for a Vin Correction on your previous return.

Below is the Step-by-Step instructions to file for a VIN correction:

  • Log in to your ExpressTruckTax account.
  • Click on “Start New Return”, then select “VIN Correction” under “Form 2290 amendment.”
  • Choose whether you are filing a VIN correction for a return that was originally filed with us.
  • Provide your tax year information, old VIN, and the corrected VIN.
  • Complete the rest of the return and transmit it to the IRS.

(If you have filed your original return with us, the data from the original return would be auto-updated in the VIN Correction Form and you do not have to pay for the return.)

  1. Increase in Taxable Gross Weight

If, during the tax year that you filed Form 2290 for, the weight of your vehicle is increased and is placed into a different weight brackett, you will need to file a Taxable Gross Weight Amendment.

To file a Taxable Gross Weight Amendment with ExpressTruckTax, follow these steps:

  • Log in to your account.
  • Click on “Start New Return”, then select “Taxable Gross Weight Increase” under “Form 2290 Amendments”.
  • Choose the Taxable Gross Weight Increase Amendment option for a return that was originally filed with us.
  • Provide the vehicle information and increased taxable gross weight category (Your adjusted HVUT for the remaining year will be calculated automatically.)
  • Check your return and transmit it to the IRS.
  1. Mileage Exceeded

If you filed for a suspended vehicle for the tax return, but the vehicle went over the 5,000 miles (7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles), then you must file for a Mileage Limit Exceeded Amendment.

To File a Mileage Limit Exceeded Amendment, follow the instructions below:

  • Log in to your account.
  • Click on “Start New Return” and select “Mileage Limit Exceeded” under “Form 2290 amendment.”
  • Choose whether you are filing Mileage Limit Exceeded Amendment for a return that was originally filed with us.
  • Provide the required information about your vehicle.
  • Your adjusted HVUT for the remaining year will be calculated automatically based on the vehicle’s weight category.
  • Check your return and transmit it to the IRS.

When Can I not file an Amendment?

Amendments are there for minor mistakes that are easy to make, like getting one number wrong on your VIN or not estimating your mileage correctly. Amendments cannot be used if larger more substantial errors occur.

If you get important information completely incorrect, like your name, address, or the completely wrong VIN, you must file a Form 8849 in order to void your previous Form 2290, then you will need to re-file a Form 2290 with the correct information.

Why File your Amendments with ExpressTruckTax?

ExpressTruckTax offers all three of these amendments to their users.

If you filed the original Form 2290 with ExpressTruckTax, our program will automatically fill in most of the information that was given in the original return.

We make filing amendments easy and you’ll be able to check the status of your correction while it’s being processed.

Also, if you filed the original return with ExpressTruckTax, your VIN Correction Amendment will be free of charge! We understand how easy it is to mess up a 17 digit code, so we don’t want our clients to be penalized for a simple mistake!

How To Make An IRS Payment Using A Debit/Credit Card

The 2021-22 tax season is open and in full swing! This means it’s time to file your Form 2290 and make your HVUT payment.

The IRS offers multiple different ways to make your HVUT payment. It is important to consider each payment method carefully to ensure that your payment makes it to the IRS on time to avoid any late fees.

This year, the IRS has reopened the ability to pay your HVUT with a Credit/Debit card. This is a reliable way to pay for HVUT payment and have peace of mind that it was sent to the IRS.

How to Pay the IRS with your Debit/Credit Card

First, make sure that you check the Debit/Credit Card payment option when filling out your From 2290. Please note that you cannot pay the IRS tax payment through ExpressTruckTax.

Once your Form 2290 is submitted to the IRS, you can go ahead and make your HVUT payment to the IRS. Go to the Pay Taxes by Debit or Credit Card page on the IRS website.

Follow the steps on this page depending on your card type and HVUT payment amount. Be aware that there is also a fee to use your debit/credit card when paying on the IRS site.

Other Payment Options

If you decide not to pay with a debit/credit card, here are the other options for payment that the IRS accepts:

  • Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW) a standard bank account transfer. You will need to provide your bank account and routing numbers to the IRS. The payment will be withdrawn within 1 or 2 business days
  • Electronic Federal Tax Payment Systems (EFTPS)– a service that the IRS offers to simplify tax payments. You will have to create an account here and enroll in the program.
  • Check or Money Order– If you choose this option, you will have to remember to mail out your check or money order before the HVUT payment due date. Mail it to the following address:

Change Payment on Form 2290

Once you submit your Form 2290, you can change the selected payment method ( unless you picked the EFW option) to the IRS. So double-check and make sure that the payment method you choose is the one you use.

2. Choose the best method to make your HVUT payments

There are three IRS HVUT 290 payment methods available to truckers for the 2020-21 tax year.

Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW)

EFW is just your standard bank account transfer. You’ll need to provide your bank account number and routing number to the IRS. Typically they will withdraw your payment within one or two business days.

Electronic Federal Tax Payment Service (EFTPS)

EFTPS is a service offered by the IRS to simplify tax payments. It is a highly secure solution that allows you to schedule out payments in advance

If you choose EFTPS to pay your IRS 2290 payment, you’ll need to create an account by enrolling in the program here.

Check or Money Order

If you choose to make your 2290 payment by check or money order, you’ll need to remember to mail it to them. The responsibility to be on time is entirely on you.

Mail your check or money order to:

Internal Revenue Service,

P.O. Box 804525,

Cincinnati, OH 45280-4525

3. Choose the right 2290 E-file provider

However, with ExpressTruckTax, everything is upfront. Our pricing is transparent. Our interview-style e-filing process makes filing easy. And we make sure you know how and when you need to pay the IRS.

Almost out of Time! Avoid Penalties, File IRS 2290 Now

The IRS 2290 filing deadline is coming up on September 3rd, 2019.

If you’re thinking of putting off filing IRS 2290 or waiting to pay your heavy vehicle use tax, I’m here to prepare you for the IRS penalties you can expect.

Plus, we’ll go over how exactly to avoid those penalties while saving money and time.

Let’s get started.

Everything You Need For IRS 2290 Filing

IRS Form 2290 Filing Deadline

As mentioned, the 2290 deadline is September 3rd, 2019.

This is the deadline to file IRS Form 2290 and pay your 2290 tax amount.

Failing to file and pay heavy vehicle use tax will result in penalties from the IRS. The penalty for failing to file IRS Form 2290 on time is 4.5% of the total highway tax 2290 amount you owe, with additional 0.54% interest each month.

However, the penalty for filing your IRS Form 2290 but failing to pay your highway tax 2290 amount is 0.5% of the HVUT payment, substantially less than failing to file.

The interest is the same.

If you can’t afford to make your HVUT payment right this moment, file IRS Form 2290 anyway. There’s no reason to miss the deadline. The whole process takes a matter of minutes and can be done from your phone.

IRS 2290 Filing Tips

Save time by gathering information before you dive in. Here’s what you need for IRS Form 2290 filing:

–  EIN

You must have an EIN to file IRS 2290. If you need one, you can try to get one from the IRS in time, but we suggest calling TSNAmerica at 803.386.0320.

–  Business Information

You’ll need to enter your business name and address at the beginning of your IRS Form 2290.

–  VIN

This is your Vehicle Identification Number, and should be 17 characters long.

–  Authorized Signatory Details

This is the 5-digit unique signature PIN you’ll need to use to sign your IRS Form 2290.

–  Gross Taxable Weight

Your vehicle’s gross taxable weight is its weight when fully equipped for service, minus the weight of you and the load. You can find this on your cab card or sticker inside the door.

–  HVUT Payment Information

Pay your HVUT 2290 tax amount online fast. Leading IRS-authorized e-file providers like ExpressTruckTax will offer multiple payment options, including credit card, direct debit, EFW (Electronic Funds Transfer), and EFTPS (Electronic Federal Tax Payment System).

Once you’re ready, choose an IRS-authorized online filing system. Filing IRS 2290 highway use tax online will save you loads of time and ensure that you receive your 2290 Schedule 1 fast.

The Quickest Way to File

As mentioned, filing IRS 2290 and paying HVUT 2290 online will save you tons of time.

The entire process takes minutes.

IRS Form 2290 HVUT Payment Options

Every minute the August 31 deadline for your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290 creeps a little closer. It’s already the last week of July, and the deadline will be here before you know it, so be prepared to file. Also, be sure to keep in mind that not only do you need to file by the deadline, but you need to pay the amount of HVUT you owe by the deadline as well, and you have a few different payment options.

How to Pay Your HVUT?

While filing your 2290 with ExpressTruckTax you’ll follow a step-by-step guide to complete your form in a matter of minutes. Once you get to the IRS payment step you can choose between 3 different payment options based on the most convenient method for you.

1. Direct Debit or Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW), is the payment option where you provide your banking information (account and routing number) through ExpressTruckTax’s safe and secure system to authorize the IRS to debit the amount you owe from your bank account. It is important that your account has enough funds to cover the amount you owe.

The amount is generally withdrawn in 24 to 48 hours after providing authorization. Keep in mind that this involves your banking information, not your card number. The IRS will not accept credit cards.

If you need to cancel your payment contact IRS payment services at 1.888.353.4537 at least 2 days before the payment date.

2. EFTPS (Electronic Federal Tax Payment System) is the electronic tax payment system used by the IRS. If you choose this payment option you will be taken to the EFTPS site, and you’ll create a free account.

In order to pay the IRS through EFTPS, you will provide your bank account information and verify that the IRS is allowed to withdraw your tax payment from that account. In order to make your payment by the deadline, you must schedule it before 8 p.m. the day before the deadline for it to be received by the IRS in time.

3. You can also pay the amount of HVUT you owe with a Check or Money Order. If you choose this option you will need to print your completed payment voucher, 2290-V, from page 5 of your completed 2290 Form and mail to the IRS.

Make your check or money order payable to the United States Treasury. Also, you will need to include your name, address, EIN, the date, and the words “IRS Form 2290” with your payment. Do not staple your payment and voucher together.

Remember, never send cash through the mail.

Send your payment and voucher 2290-V to:

Internal Revenue Service,
P.O. Box 804525,
Cincinnati,
OH 45280-4525.

Important: If you have already paid your HVUT via Direct Debit or EFW and received a letter from the IRS saying they were unable to debit the funds there are a few likely causes:

– Your account and routing number were entered into ExpressTruckTax incorrectly. Even entering one character incorrectly will prevent the IRS from being able to withdraw the amount you owe.

– The IRS tried to debit your account, but you had insufficient funds. If you are even as little as 50 cents short then the IRS will not debit the funds.

If you receive a letter from the IRS saying they could not withdraw the funds from the bank account provided then you will need to send a check or money order to the IRS in order to pay the amount you owe by the August 31st deadline.
