Why Should You Pay Form 2290 HVUT By Credit Card?

Hey everyone! So when it comes to paying your IRS tax due for your Form 2290, it’s typically $550 for a vehicle that is over 75,000 pounds on the road year after year, um, and again, if you have two or five or ten trucks, that just multiplies per truck.

So, there’s lots of different ways to pay the IRS tax due. One of the most convenient ways and smartest ways for your business is to pay that with a credit or debit card. Again, we’ve kind of talked about the fact that there are benefits to using the credit card from the credit card side, and also that gives you a little bit of extra time to make that payment.

So, when you’re on ExpressTruckTax.com, if you’re filing for a single vehicle, I believe it’s question number four, talks about the IRS tax payment, and there are five different choices listed there. The very top choice is credit card through ExpressTruckTax, and again, this is the easiest way because you enter your credit card one time and you’re paying your filing fee and your tax payment at the same time.

You don’t have to re-enter that information, so that is a huge time saver for you. Also, what are the common mistakes that happen when you choose to pay the credit card with a third party, which is also an option? However, you’ve got to go to that website, choose a third party because there are a couple different ones listed there, and you have to re-enter all of your information that you’ve already filed with ExpressTruckTax. There’s a lot of room for mistake there.

When you choose to pay with a credit card through ExpressTruckTax, you don’t have to re-enter that information. You enter your information for your 2290, choose credit or debit card, and check out. You’re done! There’s nothing else for you to do. By paying with the credit or debit card, there are some benefits, um, you know, whether you get cash back or points or different, there’s different credit card, um, incentives for using those credit cards. So, that is a really smart decision because, again, you’re making more time for yourself and you’re eliminating mistakes.

So, if you do have any questions, though, about the credit card payment or about any other information on your 2290, we do have a full support team, and we are here to help you Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 5:30.

You can always call us at 704-234-6005 or send us an email to support@expresstrucktax.com. We also have that live chat feature on our website as well, so if you do have any questions, please feel free to call us.

Did You Receive an IRS Letter About Non-Payment?

Historically, the IRS tends to send non-payment letters before the Form 2290 payment deadline of August 31st.  However, this year, the IRS deployed a program change that delayed the posting of Form 2290 to help eliminate non-payment letters

This letter says that you failed to make your HVUT payment and gives instructions on how to submit payment.

How Can You Check To Make Sure The Payment Was Made and What Should You Do If You Have Proof Of Payment?

ExpressTruckTax encourages you to check the account you chose to make the IRS tax payment with (EFW, EFTPS, Credit/Debit, or Check/Money Order) to make sure the HVUT payment was successfully debited. If you do not remember what method of IRS tax payment you chose, you can log into your ExpressTruckTax.com account and see the method you chose on your Dashboard.

You can also click the return number to see more information about your IRS payment method selection:

If you check your account and the US Treasury debited the tax payment, you should receive another letter from the IRS within the next few weeks that shows a zero balance.

If you continue to receive IRS non-payment notices, it’s best to contact the IRS directly using the phone number located on the top right corner of the first page of the notice (800.829.0115). When you speak with the IRS agent, you want to ask them if the payment you made has been applied to the correct tax year and tax form (Form 2290).

I Checked My Account And The IRS Tax Payment Was Not Debited. What Do I Need To Do Now?

If you checked the account you chose to make the IRS tax payment (EFW, EFTPS, Credit/Debit, or Check/Money Order) and the tax payment has not been debited, you simply need to follow the instructions on the IRS notice and submit payment as soon as possible.

If you have further questions regarding IRS Form 2290 tax payments, please contact the IRS directly at 800.829.0115.

Did You Forget To Make The HVUT Payment?

The 2021-22 Form 2290 tax season has come to an end. Your Form 2290 and HVUT payment needed to be sent to the IRS before the August 31st deadline.

If you filed the Form 2290 on time and sent your HVUT payment to the IRS  before the deadline,  then congratulations! You’re all done for this year!

But when you filed the Form 2290, did you also remember to go make your payment separately to the IRS? If not, it is important to make the payment as soon as you can in order to avoid further unwanted penalties.

What Happens If The Payment Is Late?

If your HVUT payment is late, then the IRS will be issuing penalties. Your HVUT payment needed to be made or sent out by the end of the day on August 31st to be considered “on-time”.

But luckily, as long as you filed your Form 2290 on time, the penalties for a late HVUT payment won’t be as high. However, it is still important to make your payment as soon as possible.

The longer you wait to make the payment, the higher the penalties will be, and no one wants to pay more than they have to!

How To Make The Payment

When you filed the Form 2290, there was a section where you chose which payment method you intended to make the payment with.

Here are the different payment options that the HVUT payment can be made with:

  • Debit and Credit Card- to make your HVUT payment using your debit/credit cards, you must make your payment at IRS.Gov/PayUsingCard
  • Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW)– a bank account transfer. Your bank account and routing numbers are required and the payment will be withdrawn automatically within 1 or 2 business days
  • Electronic Federal Tax Payment Systems (EFTPS) The IRS offers this payment method to simplify tax payments. You will have to create an account here and enroll in the program.
  • Check or Money Order You will have to mail out your check or money order for this option. You will also have to include the Form 2290-V along with the payment. Mail it to the following address:

What Deadline Is Coming Up?

The important deadline that is just right around the corner is the Form 2290 and HVUT payment due date. The Form 2290 must be filed and the HVUT payment must be made to the IRS by the end of August 31st, 2021.

Missing this deadline will result in additional charges that will keep incurring until the Form 2290 is filed and the HVUT payment is made.

What Penalties Will Be Charged?

If you miss the deadline for Form 2290, you will be subjected to additional penalties that can make the tax payment even more substantial.

If the Form 2290 is not filed in time, a penalty equal to 4.5% of the total tax amount will be incurred on top of what you would have owed. Plus, for each additional month, you are late, you will incur another .5% in interest.

If you don’t file your Form 2290, you also won’t be sent your new stamped Schedule 1. With last year’s Schedule 1 expired, you will not have proof of filing. This will be an issue when going to renew titles and licenses for your vehicle

This may also result in your vehicle being grounded, and no one wants that!
