Correcting Information on Form 2290

There are occasions when the information needs to be corrected on Form 2290 after it has been submitted and accepted by the IRS.  The process to correct the information depends on what information needs to be corrected.

Many corrections will require a phone call to the IRS at 866-699-4096.  For typos, misspellings and name corrections, you will want to correct the information on your Schedule 1 and fax it into the IRS and the IRS will make the corrections.  They may require additional information to confirm the correction, but will let you know when you call the number listed above.

If you have the wrong EIN on your Schedule 1, you will want to correct the EIN and fax it along with a letter explaining that the EIN was wrong.  If the return was accepting with an EIN that was not yours, it means the EIN belongs to someone else and the IRS will have to figure out whose payment you made.  If you are told that you need to file a new 2290 and pay the taxes again and then file for a refund using Form 8849, call back until you talk to someone who will assist you without making you pay the tax again and have to wait for a refund.

If your business name changes for any reason, but the EIN remains the same, you will change the business name and fill out the Name Change form and MAIL to the IRS.  A fax will not be accepted as an original signature is required.

The easiest and most common correction is the VIN correction.  VIN corrections can be done online with ExpressTruckTax and are completely free, even if you did not use ExpressTruckTax to file the original return.  You would file a Form 2290 Amendment and choose the VIN Correction option.  It is completely free and takes only a couple minutes!

Basing the IRS Form 2290 HVUT Tax on weight is fairer

The heavy vehicle use tax or HVUT is a fee assessed annually on heavy vehicles operating on public highways at registered gross weights equal to or exceeding 55,000 pounds. The gross taxable weight of a vehicle is determined by adding the unloaded weight of the motor vehicle and any trailers together with the maximum load customarily carried on-road by the truck-trailer combination.
The HVUT rates for these vehicles are broken down into 3 categories. Vehicles that are less than 55,000 pounds do not have HVUT because they do not qualify as a heavy vehicle. Vehicles between 55,000 and 75,000 pounds owe $100, plus $22 per 1,000 pounds over 55,000 pounds. Vehicles that weigh over 75,000 pounds the maximum HVUT is $550 annually.

The damage to the road surface caused by heavy trucks is 160,000 times more than that of a car, according to the findings of the American Assciation of State Highways Official (AASHO) road test. The tax, which is based on the vehicle weight, is a significant source of transportation funding in the US.

The HVUT is more fair by ensuring that operators of heavy trucks pay a little more for the highway network relative to the motorists and light trucks who meet their responsibility through other forms of taxes (e.g., registration fees, motor fuel taxes) but do less damage to the system. So it makes more sense that the heavier vehicles pay a higher tax since they are doing more damage to the road.

President Barack Obama Pushes for the Renewal of Transportation Bills

On Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at the Rose Garden, President Barack Obama spoke about the pending Transportation Bill currently in Congress to a large gathering of highway workers. He was joined by Transportation Secretary, Ray LaHood, as well as Richard Trumka, president of the AFL-CIO, and also David Chavern, the chief operating officer of the Chamber of Commerce.

Among other things, the main focus of President Obama’s speech revolved around the necessity of renewing the Transportation Bill that is currently set to expire September 30. The primary arguments for extending the bill were that not extending it would cost up to a million jobs of hard working highway workers and extending the bill would also bring much needed tax revenue to fund road repairs and maintenance.

“Now is the time for Congress to extend the transportation bill, and keep our workers on the job. Now is the time to put our country before party and give certainty to the people who are trying to get by. There’s work to done. There are workers ready to do it. That’s why I expect Congress to act immediately.” said the President.

EIN(Employer Identification Number) Change:IRS Form 2290 and 8849

Important Notice For Anyone Filing Truck Taxes for either IRS Form 2290 or Form 8849!!!

The IRS is now checking EIN (Employer Identification Number) verifications much more thoroughly then they have in the past. Previously, The IRS did not always verify the EIN very extensively. As of now, the IRS requires that all EIN’s be at least two weeks old in order to file with them. So, if you have a very new EIN, it would be best to wait at least 2 weeks before filing.

This information will be particularly useful for individual Owner-Operators, as well as Service Providers that file on behalf of many different Owner-Operators. If you need to apply for an EIN, you can contact the IRS by phone or apply online on the IRS website.

IRS Form 2290: The Filing Process

Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, or HVUT, can be filed with the IRS by using IRS Form 2290 . This fee is required by the IRS for all vehicles with registered gross weights equal to or exceeding 55,000 pounds.  This Form must be filed annually for heavy vehicles operating on public highways.

This IRS Form contains a Schedule 1 that must be stamped by the IRS before the vehicle can be registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles.  The IRS accepts this form by mail, but that can take up to several weeks to process.  This form could also be taken directly to the IRS office, but that option can take several hours of your day.  This must be accompanied by a proof of EFTPS payment.

It is required that this form be filed annually for each taxable vehicle that is used on public highways during the tax year.  The tax year begins on July 1st and ends on June 30th.  A Form 2290 must also be filed when a vehicle is placed in service.  The due date for that is the last day of the following month.  For example: if a vehicle is placed in service on January 5th, the Form 2290 will be due on February 28th.

Even though there are thousands, if not millions, of Heavy Vehicles that are required to file the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, the IRS still requires everyone to either mail the Form 2290 to the IRS or actually come to the IRS office.  Fortunately there is an easier way that has recently become available.  www.ExpressTruckTax.com allows you to fill out your IRS Form 2290 online and send it to the IRS electronically!

Express Truck Tax is authorized by the IRS to E-File Form 2290.  This way you can get a stamped schedule 1 in about 10 minutes.  The file is electronically submitted to the IRS, and within minutes the file is processed by the IRS and sent back to the person filing.  The form will then contain a watermark from the IRS as proof that it has been processed.

Tax Credit Vehicles (IRS Form 2290)

You may be surprised to know that you can file an IRS Form 2290 to claim a credit for certain Heavy Vehicles in some scenarios.  You can also E-File an IRS Form 2290 for these credit vehicles through www.expresstrucktax.com

Heavy vehicles that were stolen, destroyed, or sold before June 1st and not used during the rest of the year qualify as a vehicle to claim a credit for.  If a heavy vehicle was used for 5,000 miles or less, or an agricultural vehicle that was used for 7,500 miles or less, it too qualifies as a credit vehicle.  It is important to also note that a credit, lower tax rate, exemption, or refund is not allowed for an occasional light or decreased load; nor is it allowed for a discontinued or changed use of the vehicle.

Although the rules that apply to credit vehicles may be complicated and confusing, ExpressTruckTax.com helps make it simple.  The filing process only takes a few minutes.  If you need any help, their dedicated customer support team can help walk you through the process.

IRS Will Not Mail Form 2290

The Internal Revenue Service recently announced that they will not be mailing Form 2290 to taxpayers this year. This step was taken due to the increase in electronic filing. It also seems to be encouragement to file electronically as well. The IRS had legitimate reason to do this because filing electronically really is the quickest, easiest, and safest way to file.

Fortunately, it has become incredibly simple to file Form 2290 or other Tax forms associated with the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) such as Form 8849. All you have to do is go to www.ExpressTruckTax.com and start filing. You can file your Schedule 1 for Form 2290, Form 8849, A VIN Correction, and Fuel Tax.

This easy to use system allows the user to walk through the process at their own speed and asks questions in plain English, not confusing tax jargon. There are even special deals for Owner-Operators who need to file for multiple vehicles. Tax Professionals may also benefit from special pricing for multiple filings.
