What Is The Form 2290 Due Date?

Hey, it’s Amber with ExpressTruckTax, and we get the question a lot: What is the due date for the Form 2290? And sometimes, that’s a trick question because there can be multiple due dates depending on if you’re putting new trucks on the road. But when you’re talking about the annual Form 2290, the due date to file and pay is August 31st.

We offer what we call pre-filing here at ExpressTruckTax, and that gives you a couple extra months to go ahead and file the 2290. We keep it on hold and transmit it to the IRS as soon as they begin accepting returns on July 1st. And then, you have until August 31st to make that payment.

So, there are a couple of different payment options. If you choose to pay with a credit card through ExpressTruckTax, that’s going to come out right there in the first week of July. If you choose check or money order, you have until the end of July to pay.

There’s EFTPS, there’s credit card through the IRS, and there is electronic funds withdrawal. So, there are five different payment types that you can choose. But that just depends on when you’re making the payment.

So go ahead and file your Form 2290 for the 2023-2024 tax year starting now at ExpressTruckTax.com. Go ahead and get the paperwork side of it out of the way so that you’re not wondering, “Oh gosh, it’s not hanging over your head, wondering when do I have to do it?” All summer long, you can go on with your business and drive without wondering when it’s due. And then, you can make that payment later.

Did You Get a Letter From the IRS About HVUT 2290?

You thought you were done with the 2290 tax… until you received a letter from the IRS about non-payment.

If you filed sometime close to the 2290 tax due date, you might’ve received a notice from the IRS asking you to pay 2290.

If you already filed your heavy use tax form online and paid your 2290 tax, this can be frustrating and confusing. Don’t sweat it just yet.

Here’s what it means.

IRS Letter Regarding HVUT 2290

Why did I receive a letter?

This happens every year. It could mean you still need to pay 2290 tax, or, it could just be a side-effect of the high volume of returns that the IRS receives close to the Form 2290 due date.

Sometimes, IRS systems don’t communicate information very efficiently, especially when they’re overloaded with last-minute HVUT 2290 filers.

What Should I Do?

Most likely, the IRS will send you a follow-up letter in a few weeks telling you that the first letter was an error, but, before assuming, double-check that your 2290 tax amount was paid in full.

First, check to see how you chose to pay your heavy use tax to the IRS. Did you pay 2290 with a credit card, debit card, EFW, EFTPS, check, or money order?

If you chose EFW, or Electronic Funds Withdrawal, check your bank statement to ensure that the funds were successfully drafted from your account.

If they were, you’re all set! You paid HVUT 2290 tax successfully. However, if the amount hasn’t been removed, contact us. There may have been an error entering your account information.

Secondly, if you filed with ExpressTruckTax and chose to pay 2290 with a credit or debit card, make sure you made that payment separately. This payment would’ve been made outside of ExpressTruckTax through Official Payments after you completed your filing.
If you forgot to pay your 2290 tax through Official Payments, do so as quickly as possible.

Why You Need to File Form 2290 for 2019 TODAY

The Form 2290 due date is getting close!

By now, there’s tons of content floating around about Form 2290 for 2019…

There are plenty of different providers offering promo codes for filling, and various articles containing IRS 2290 instructions.

So, what’s the truth? We’ve got you covered with everything you need to know about Form 2290 2019 to file successfully, avoid IRS penalties, and keep the money in your pocket.

The 101 On Form 2290 2019

What’s the Deal With the Form 2290 Due Date?

If you’ve been in the industry for a while, you’re probably used to the August 31st Form 2290 due date, but there’s another date being tossed around this year.

Because August 31, 2019 is a Saturday, and the following business day is Labor Day, the IRS will officially accept 2290 Form 2019 up until September 3, 2019.

Unfortunately, that extension doesn’t change the fact that the IRS and the postal office will be closed Monday, September 2nd.

Therefore, it is critical that you file your Form 2290 2019 TODAY.

Seriously, don’t put it off. Which brings me to… IRS penalties.

If you file after September, 3rd (which I hope you don’t), you’ll face a penalty of 4.5% of your Form 2290 2019 tax amount, with additional interest of 0.54% per month.

If you filed your Form 2290 for 2019 but did not pay your tax amount by the deadline, that penalty will be 0.5% of your total Form 2290 2019 tax amount, plus 0.54% interest per month.

You may avoid penalties if you include a reasonable explanation for filing IRS Form 2290 for 2019 after the 2290 due date, but don’t count on it.

What IRS 2290 Instructions do I Need to Start?

Filing is simple, but before you start, gather all the information you’ll need to file 2290 Form 2019. It’ll speed up your process.

Here’s how to know if you need to file:

You’ll need to file if your vehicle has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more and is driven on public highways.

You can claim an exemption or suspension for your vehicle if it:
–  Was used 5,000 highway miles or less during the tax period

–  Is an agricultural vehicle and was used 7,500 miles or less during the tax period
–  Was stolen or destroyed during the tax period
–  Was sold during the tax period

Here’s what you need to file:

–  Your EIN (Employer Identification Number) –– NOT your Social Security Number
–  Your business name and its address
–  The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Hint: it’ll be 17 characters.
–  Authorized Signatory Details
–  Vehicle’s Gross Taxable Weight (how much it weighs when fully equipped for service, minus the weight of you and any loads).

Next, we’ll talk about how to file.

So, What’s the Deal with the IRS 2290 Deadline?

If you’re reading this article, you probably know that you need to file your IRS 2290 soon.

But did you know that the 2290 filing deadline is September 3rd, 2019, not the usual August 31st?

Maybe you’re wondering why the 2290 deadline is different.

Or perhaps you have some confusion surrounding filing IRS Form 2290 and paying your actual IRS 2290 payment.

Better yet, you might be thinking about how much of a hassle this is, and wondering why it’s necessary in the first place.

Well, you’re about to find out! I’m here to answer all of your IRS 2290 questions.

Form 2290 Due Date

Why September 3rd?

Normally, the Form 2290 deadline is August 31st.

This year, that date falls on a Saturday. The next business day would be Monday, September 2nd, but that’s Labor Day.

Therefore, this year, the Form 2290 due date is September 3rd, 2019.

You might be thinking about how lucky you are to get a couple extra days this year but think again.

As tempting as it may be to wait until the last minute, how likely are you to think about filing IRS 2290 and paying your 2290 highway use tax after a weekend and holiday…?

Trust me. File today or, at the very latest, file August 30th. That way you’ll ensure that the 2290 deadline is met.

Plus, if there are any issues or your IRS Form 2290 is rejected and you need to make corrections, you’ll have time to do so before the Form 2290 due date.

I’m not asking much. If you file with an IRS-authorized e-file provider like ExpressTruckTax the whole process takes as little as 10 minutes.

Seriously, just get it over with.

What About the IRS 2290 Payment?

So, you might’ve heard that if you can’t afford to pay your IRS 2290 payment right now, you should go ahead and file IRS Form 2290 anyway.

This is true.

Failing to file IRS Form 2290 by the 2290 filing deadline will result in a penalty of 4.5% of the 2290 highway use tax due. This will increase monthly for up to 5 months.

However, the penalty for failing to pay your IRS 2290 payment is only 0.5% of your total tax amount, plus additional interest of 0.54% per month.

Even if you can’t afford to pay your IRS 2290 payment right now, you should still file.

If you file but do not pay your full 2290 highway use tax amount, you’ll face a much lower penalty (0.5% compared to 4.5% of the total tax due).

Maybe you can pay by September 3rd, but not by tomorrow.

File today anyway.

You don’t want to get stuck with a rejected return or worse, without a 2290 Schedule 1.
You may face unexpected penalties.
You never know what could happen. Take a moment to file now.

When Will I Get My 2290 Schedule 1?

Your 2290 Schedule 1 is a huge part of why it’s so critical for you to file on time.

An updated 2290 Schedule 1 is necessary for operation, including anything from renewing your tags to traveling internationally or renewing your IFTA license.

If you file IRS 2290 online with ExpressTruckTax, you’ll get a copy of your 2290 Schedule 1 just minutes after IRS Form 2290 filing. It doesn’t get much easier than that.

This is Why IRS 2290 Online Filing is the Ultimate Tax Experience

Today, IRS Form 2290 filing isn’t half bad. Filers can log in to a website, enter some information, and file with the click of a button.

Before 2290 online filing was an option, all forms were filled out by hand and mailed or brought in to the IRS office.

This method led to long IRS lines, frustrated filers, and severe wait time between submitting IRS 2290 and finding out if it was accepted or rejected.

Not to mention the delay in receiving a copy of your 2290 Schedule 1.

Times have changed for the better. Here’s everything you need to know about filing Form 2290 online.

Have You Received an IRS Letter About Non-Payment?

Don’t fret just yet! The IRS does this every year (we haven’t figured out why yet). If you filed close to the IRS Form 2290 deadline, there’s a good chance you’ve received one of these lovely letters from the IRS stating you never paid your 2290 tax.

Our best guess is that the IRS systems don’t communicate information all that well, especially when the volume of returns is so high. What we do know is this happens every year, and historically the IRS will send you a follow-up letter in a couple of weeks telling you the first letter was sent in error. So before you panic or throw this letter away, please double check to be sure the full tax amount was paid:

Why Would The IRS Send me a Letter?

It is likely an error on their end, but you always want to make sure. Before you panic or brush off the notice take the following steps:

Have You Received an IRS Letter About Non-Payment?1. Check how you chose to pay the IRS. (EFW, EFTPS, Credit/Debit, Or check/money order)

2. If you chose Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW) check your bank statement to verify the funds were successfully drafted from your account. If they were, you should be in the clear! Wait for a follow-up letter. However, if the amount has not been removed, we encourage you to contact us. There could have been an error when entering your account information.

3. If you chose to pay the tax with a debit or credit card make sure you did make that payment separately. (Note: This payment would’ve been made outside ExpressTruckTax after you completed your filing) If you didn’t realize this or forgot to pay, you can pay through Official Payments.

So Your IRS Form 2290 Was Rejected. What’s Next?

So Your IRS Form 2290 Was Rejected. What's Next?

Your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) IRS Form 2290 due date was Friday, August 31st. Yup, that’s right; it was last Friday. This means you are on the clock and you need to file Form 2290 fast to avoid higher penalties and interest. Remember, if you filed before the deadline and it was rejected you are still subject to penalties until you file a corrected form.

Why 2290 Forms Are Commonly Rejected

So why wait? Go ahead and use ExpressTruckTax to quickly and conveniently knock out your IRS Form 2290 today. As a bonus, use the following tips about why 2290 forms are commonly rejected to get yours accepted the first time.

EIN Problems

You need an EIN or Employer Identification Number to complete your IRS Form 2290. There’s no way around it. If you use your SSN (Social Security Number) in place of your EIN when you file Form 2290, it will be rejected instantly.

Duplicated IRS Form 2290

Your rig’s VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) can only be filed for once during the HVUT tax period. Duplicates will be rejected, so make sure that you’re filing for the current tax period which runs from July 1st, 2018 to June 30th, 2019. If you accidentally filed for the previous tax period then that could be why your form is considered a duplicate.

You also need to make sure that you enter your VIN correctly. If it’s one character off, then your form could get rejected. If your form is rejected for this reason don’t panic, you can quickly and easily file free VIN corrections with ExpressTruckTax.

RTN Errors

You can pay the amount of HVUT you owe to the IRS through direct debit or electronic funds withdrawal, and that process involves providing your bank account number and RTN (Routing Transfer Number).

If you enter this information with as little as one character off, the IRS will not be able to debit the funds, and your form will be rejected. This is also the case if you do not have enough funds in your account to cover the full amount.

Enter your information, which can be found on one of your checks, correctly. If your form is rejected for an incorrect RTN or insufficient funds you will need to edit your form and retransmit it or choose a different payment method.

Current IRS Penalties And Interest

So Your IRS Form 2290 Was Rejected. What's Next?If you have failed to file your Form 2290 or a corrected amendment you are facing a penalty of 4.5 % of the total tax amount due. Your penalty will increase on a monthly basis for up to five months. Plus, if you failed to make your HVUT payment will also need to pay a .5% penalty per month until it is paid in full.

More importantly, you are driving with an expired Schedule 1. You need your stamped Schedule 1 to register new vehicles and to renew your tags with the DMV. Without it, you are operating illegally.
