Hard to believe another tax season has come and gone; it seems like it just began. Today officially marks the deadline for Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes and Form 2290, and for those of you that haven’t filed yet, it’s time to get a move on!

Why push off what you have to do any longer and subject yourself to late penalties? We know you give enough of your hard-earned money to the IRS every year, so make sure that you get filed on time so you don’t have to give them any more!

How Can I File Today?

Just head on over to ExpressTruckTax.com, and you can get e-filed and receive your Schedule 1 in minutes! If you haven’t already filed with us before, you’ll need to create an account. All you’ll need to e-file is your:

  • EIN (employer identification number)
  • Vehicle VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)
  • Vehicle Taxable Gross Weight (Weight of Truck+Trailer+Maximum Load)
Once you finish your filing, we’ll send you a copy of your Schedule 1 to your email as soon as it’s accepted, which usually takes 20 minutes or less. You’ll also have the option to receive a text notification upon acceptance, automatic fax of your Schedule 1, and even a postal mailing of your full form if you’d like.

Plus, if you’ve filed with us before and none of your information has changed, you can copy last year’s return! Just click “Start New Return” from your dashboard after login, and then after choosing the tax year and first used month, just select “Copy a Previously Accepted Return”. No needless data entry, just click, pay, and transmit. Doesn’t get much easier than that, right?

What Happens if I Don’t Get Filed Today?

Well we don’t want to scare you but if you don’t file on time, you will be subject to late fees and penalties. The penalty for late payment of highway use taxes is 4.5% interest that accrues monthly on the total tax amount due. So for those of you with larger tax bills be sure that you file on time, because the interest will add up in a hurry.

IRS Recommends E-Filing Form 2290 HVUT

Anyone who is filing a return with 25 or more vehicles is required to file electronically, but the IRS is encouraging everyone to do so. Through an IRS Authorized E-File Provider, like ExpressTruckTax.com, you can file your Form 2290, pay your HVUT taxes owed to the IRS and receive your Stamped Schedule 1 within minutes. When you E-File your Form 2290 for Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, it will save you time and you will have an online record of previous year’s filings.
The entire process only takes a few minutes, including getting your Schedule 1 back. No more manually filling out paper returns and mailing them in and waiting to receive your Schedule 1 back in the mail, or taking into the IRS field office only to stand in line, often times for hours. When you E-File you avoid all of that and once you create your account and file your return, it is even easier for future years, because you will not have to reenter all the information; it will already be in the system.
It is your responsibility to know when and if you have to file. You must file Form 2290 and Schedule 1 for the tax period beginning on July 1, 2012, and ending on June 30, 2013, if a taxable highway motor vehicle (defined below) is registered, or required to be registered, in your name under state, District of Columbia, Canadian, or Mexican law at the time of its first use during the period and the vehicle has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more.
The deadline is August 31, 2012, so file now. The IRS will shut down their E-Filing system on at 1pm August 31, 2012 for maintenance over the Labor Day Holiday Weekend. The E-Filing system will resume on at noon on Tuesday, September 4, 2012. Since it will only take minutes, there is no need to put it off until the last minute.
