Form 2290 VIN Checker: A Free Feature from ExpressTruckTax

The Form 2290 tax season is here and the deadline is only a few weeks away! The deadline to file for 2021-22 is August 31st, 2021.

When filing your Form 2290, it’s important to have all of your information together and ready to go! In order for your Form 2290 to be accepted by the IRS, all of your information must be correct.

It is especially important that, when you are filing, your VIN is correct. Checking your VIN before you file will reduce the possibility of having an incorrect VIN on your Schedule 1, as well as make the filing process simpler.

What Is A VIN?

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique number assigned to your truck and is issued by the United States Department of Transportation. It’s important to note that two different trucks will never have the same code.

To find your vehicle’s  VIN, you can find it stated in the registration, title documents, or on the actual vehicle.

When you file your Form 2290, the IRS requires the VIN of each vehicle so the stamped Schedule 1 contains the code for each vehicle.

How Do I Check My VIN?

ExpressTruckTax offers a free VIN checker to all of their clients. The Form 2290 VIN checker is an exclusive feature that helps to ensure the VIN entered is correct when you are e-filing.

Ensuring that your VIN is validated before filing reduces the need of having to file an amendment to fix the VIN on your stamped Schedule 1. Every vehicle that is used during the tax period needs to have it’s unique VIN number on a stamped Schedule 1, which proves that the Form 2290 was filed.

Why Do you need to check your VIN?

The IRS typically does not reject a Form 2290 that contains the wrong VIN, but if the VIN is incorrect, you will have to file a VIN correction amendment to get the VIN changed on your stamped Schedule 1.

As a result of this, it saves you time and money to ensure that your VIN is correct before you submit your form to the IRS.

It’s also a service provided at no additional cost by ExpressTruckTax, so what do you have to lose?!

It’s Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Time

The HVUT season runs from July 1 through June 30 of the following year.

If you’re an owner operator, leasing company, trucking company, or any other business that owns heavy vehicles with a gross weight above 55,000 pounds traveling on public highways, you must file form 2290.

Usually, you can’t start filing until the tax period begins on July 1, but we’ve gone ahead and started pre-filing now.

What is Pre-Filing?

Pre-filing is the easiest way to e-file your taxes early. You can get ahead of the game by filing an entire month early. After you’re done pre-filing your return, ExpressTruckTax will hold onto it until July 1st—once the IRS starts accepting 2290s, yours will be at the top of the stack.

Should I Pre-File Form 2290? Why?

Even though the tax period hasn’t started for the 2016-17 season, pre-filing starts now! With pre-filing, users get advantages they won’t get once the official season starts. They include:

  • Finishing your taxes early, leaving more time to focus on work and life
  • No additional cost to pre-file
  • When selecting the check (or) money order option, you will get until August 31st to pay the IRS, giving you almost 3 months to save for the amount of tax you owe
  • Your Form 2290 will be automatically transmitted to the IRS on July 1st, so you will receive your stamped schedule 1 in minutes once transmitted
  • If the return is rejected for any reason, you have plenty of time to re-submit it before August 31st, making it much easier to avoid late penalties
  • VIN corrections and retransmissions for rejected returns are FREE for anyone who e-files with ExpressTruckTax
  • Customer support is available via phone, live chat, and email, with 24/7 emergency email support

If you have any questions about pre-filing 2290, (or) have questions about the e-filing process, we’ll be here to help. Give us a call at 704.234.6005!

Penalties For Not Filing Form 2290 HVUT

The heavy vehicle use tax or HVUT is a fee assessed annually on heavy vehicles operating on public highways at registered gross weights equal to or exceeding 55,000 pounds. The current tax period is July 1, 2013-June 30, 2013.  The annual deadline to file for all vehicles is August 31st, but since the 31st is on a Saturday and Monday is Labor Day, the deadline has been extended to Tuesday, September 3, 2013.

The penalty for not filing the IRS Form 2290 by the deadline is equal to 4.5% of total tax due.  This amount is assessed on a monthly basis up to five months. Those who choose not to make their HVUT payment also face an additional monthly 0.5% of the tax due penalty. Additional interest charges of 0.54% per month accrue as well. Within 5 months of not filing and paying the HVUT tax, the HVUT liability that was originally $550 will be over $700.  In addition to the monetary federal penalties, states suspend the registrations of vehicles for which proof of HVUT payment has not been provided. So not only will the taxpayer owe more money, they will also be unable to renew their registrations, so they will be unable to work. HVUT evasion penalties can even be as severe as fines and incarceration.

There are a few instances where a vehicle is exempt from paying the HVUT tax, even if most of those instances, a Form 2290 is required to be filed even if no tax is due.  You can find detailed information on the IRS site at The Trucking Tax Center.

You can E-File your Form 2290 quickly and easily at ExpressTruckTax.com and receive your Schedule 1 within minutes.  Your Schedule 1 serves as proof of payment for your HVUT.  For more information or to get started today, visit ExpressTruckTax.com or contact our Express Tax Support Center in Rock Hill, SC at 704-234-6005 or email us at support@ExpressTruckTax.com.  We have Spanish Support too!

HVUT Late Filing Penalties & Interest

Penalties can be incurred for failing to file Form 2290 returns or pay Heavy vehicle Use Taxes when they are due. There are also penalties for filing false or fraudulent returns. These penalties are imposed in addition to interest charges for late payments.

Penalties for HVUT non-compliance are costly to motor carriers. The penalty for failing to file IRS Form 2290 by August 31st is equal to 4.5% of total tax due, assessed on a monthly basis up to five months. Late filers not making an HVUT payment also face an additional monthly penalty equal to 0.5% of total tax due. Additional interest charges of 0.54% per month accrue as well.

Based on these rates, an HVUT liability that was originally $550 would climb to over $700 by the end of the five-month period of delinquency. In addition to these federal penalties, states will suspend the registrations of vehicles for which proof of HVUT payment has not been provided.

So avoid these penalties by E-Filing your Form 2290 today.  For more information or to get started, visit ExpressTruckTax.com or contact our friendly US Based Express Tax Support Center in Rock Hill, SC at 704-234-6005 or email us at support@ExpressTruckTax.com.  We have Spanish Support too!

E-File Form 2290 for Heavy Vehicles First Used in November 2012

Although the HVUT, or the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax is imposed annually, it is also mandatory for vehicles to file the IRS Form 2290 after the first use month. The typical tax year for heavy vehicles begins on July 1 and ends on June 30. For vehicles that are first used anytime during the tax year, a prorated tax must be paid for the months that the vehicle was in use. This can be done with the IRS Form 2290 and the easiest way to file the 2290 is through ExpressTruckTax.com

When a new vehicle is placed in service, the Form 2290 must be filed by the last day of the following month. The tax will be prorated based on the number of months the vehicle will have been used during the tax year. If a vehicle was used during any part of a month, the tax will be calculated for that month as a whole. For example, if a vehicle was used on November 28th, it will be taxed as though it was used the entire month, regardless of the fact it was only used for a couple of days. So vehicles that were placed in service during the month of November will need to file HVUT using the 2290 by December 31, and the tax will be based on 8 months, instead of the full year.

All you will need is:
