Understanding IRS Form 2290 Online Payment

If you work in the commercial fleet industry, you must keep up with the various taxes involved. We’ll explore filing IRS Form 2290 online and its requirements below.

Brief overview of IRS Form 2290

IRS Form 2290 is called the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax or HVUT. It’s a federal excise tax imposed on registered vehicles with a taxable gross weight of at least 55,000 pounds. The amount due is based on the taxable gross weight of the vehicle. In return for filing, you will receive a stamped Schedule 1, which you’ll need when registering your vehicle in most states.

Importance of filing IRS Form 2290

The income from IRS Form 2290 helps fund road construction and maintenance, directly benefiting those who pay it. If you fail to pay the tax, you will not be able to register your vehicle in most states and will also incur penalties. These penalties can be up to 5% of the amount due each month the form is late.

What Is IRS Form 2290 Online Payment?

Definition and explanation of IRS Form 2290

IRS Form 2290 online payment is a digital method of paying this excise tax. You may also hear it called e-file form 2290.

Importance of online payment

If you are filing for 24 or fewer vehicles, you can do this by paper. But anyone filing for 25 or more vehicles must file online. Even if you only submit the tax for a single truck, online filing will speed up the process of receiving your watermarked Schedule 1.

How To e-file IRS Form 2290

Step-by-step guide to E-filing IRS Form 2290

There are a few steps required to e-file IRS Form 2290:

  1. Information needed to complete the form — To e-file, you’ll need your employer identification number (EIN) and the taxable gross weight and vehicle identification number (VIN) of each vehicle. Gather this information for each vehicle you will register.
  2. Pick an e-filing provider for your form — Form 2290 is not directly available from IRS.gov. Instead, they offer a list of participating software providers.
  3. File the form — Follow the directions from the chosen software provider. Be aware that these providers do not charge the tax amount due but charge a fee for using their software.
  4. Choose how you will pay — There are three options:
    1. Credit or debit card
    2. EFT (electronic funds transfer)
    3. EFTPS (electronic federal tax payment system)
  5. Receive your Schedule 1 — Your watermarked Schedule 1 is emailed to you once your Form 2290 is filed, paid, and accepted by the IRS. You must print this with a legible watermark to register your vehicle in most states.

Benefits of E-filing

As mentioned above, you must e-file if registering 25 or more vehicles at a time. If you register fewer vehicles, you may file by mail. Manual filing will take considerably longer to receive your Schedule 1 in return, so most fleets choose online tax filing regardless of the number of vehicles involved.

Understanding IRS Form 2290 Amended Return

Regardless of best intentions, you may need to amend tax documents after they are filed. When this happens, you’ll need to file an IRS Form 2290 amended return.

When to file an amended return

According to IRS regulations, there are only two acceptable reasons you may need to file an amended 2290 return:

  • Unpaid tax related to an increase in taxable gross vehicle weight.
  • A suspended vehicle exceeded the mileage use limit.

You may also need to refile your Form 2290 if you need to correct the VIN on your original filing.

How to file an amended return

To file an amended Form 2290, you’ll file the exact same process as when you originally filed, with one exception. You’ll need to check the “Amended Return” box at the top of the form and note the reason for your amendment.

If you are correcting the VIN on a previously registered vehicle, do not check the “Amended Return” box. Instead, check the “VIN Correction” box.

IRS Form 2290 Due Dates

Calendar of due dates

Unlike some taxes, Form 2290 may not be due during “tax season.” Your IRS Form 2290 due date will depend on the first day your vehicle was used on a public highway. For whatever month the vehicle was first used on the highway, your Form 2290 will be due by the last day of the following month. So, if your vehicle was driven on the highway for the first time on July 15, your payment would be due by Aug. 31. You can find the calendar of due dates for Form 2290 taxes on the IRS website.

Consequences of late payment

As noted above, there can be hefty penalties for late payment on your IRS Form 2290. In addition to not receiving the Statement 1 form needed for vehicle registration, you will also need to pay fines. These fines can be up to 5% of the amount due for every month the form is late.

ExpressTruckTax, the market-leading Form 2290 e-filer offers a user-friendly solution to help truckers file their Form 2290 for the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax. Form 2290 is filed to the IRS by drivers of vehicles weighing 55,000 pounds or more. By using ExpressTruckTax, drivers are able to file their Form 2290 in only a few simple steps.

ExpressTruckTax not only makes filing Form 2290 easy but also offers filers convenient ways to pay their taxes for the HVUT to the IRS. In addition to the already established convenient payment methods including Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW), EFTPS, check or money order, and credit or debit card, ExpressTruckTax is excited to announce a new tax payment option now offered. Previously if filers wanted to pay via credit or debit card they would have to go to the IRS website and pay through an IRS-approved payment processor. This would require the filer to do extra steps on a different website to actually pay the tax. Truckers would need to enter in all of their information a second time which took extra time. Because this was an extra step that needed to be completed by filers, some would say they would pay later and end up forgetting to pay at all. This would cause drivers to be fined for being late with their tax payments. The IRS payment processors also have additional fees charged for using this service.

To ensure that drivers pay their tax on time, and not get fined, ExpressTruckTax now offers the option for drivers to pay their HVUT directly from ExpressTruckTax. Instead of having to complete the extra steps involved with paying through an IRS payment processor, filers can pay for the Form 2290 filing fee and their HVUT taxes all at the same time. When utilizing this option, there is a bank processing fee that is applied upon payment. Once the driver pays through ExpressTruckTax, the tax form and payment are submitted at the same time and filers will no longer have to worry about going to an external site and entering all of their information again or forgetting to pay altogether.

Paying through ExpressTruckTax saves drivers time and money. This new payment method offers a one-stop solution so that the filing and the payment are submitted at the same time and drivers can get back on the road without stressing over being late with their filing or tax payment. Truckers, what are you waiting for? Visit ExpressTruckTax and get your filing and tax payment out of the way today!

How To Pay Your 2290 Tax When E-filing

Taxes aren’t very much fun, even though when we pay some of them like the HVUT the money goes to repairing and improving our highways giving us a smoother ride, and preventing wear and tear on our rigs. That’s all great and all, but you still have to pay the tax yourself, so make sure you’re up to date on exactly how to pay it.

How To Pay Your 2290 HVUT

Form 2290 is used to pay your HVUT or heavy vehicle use tax. If you’re in a highway motor vehicle that has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more then you have to file e-file a HVUT 2290 form in order to get a copy of your Stamped Schedule 1. E-file means electronically filing online.

A highway motor vehicle includes vehicles that are designed to carry loads over public highways, whether they were also designed to perform other functions or not and that are self-propelled. These vehicles generally include buses, tractor trailers, and large trucks. Vans and pickup trucks tend to weigh less than 55,000 pounds.

The weight only includes the vehicle and it’s chassis or body, not it’s load. The type of load doesn’t matter either, the vehicle can be designed to passengers, supplies, or cargo.

Also, a public highway includes any road in the United States that isn’t private, including city, county, state and federal roads.

Your form 2290 is due the last day of the 2nd month after you first use your new qualifying vehicle. For example, if you first start driving a new qualifying vehicle in February then your Form 2290 would be due by March 31st. Also, the form 2290 needs to be renewed annually by August 31st.

When you file your form 2290 you have to pay your HVUT and you have a few different options for doing that.

You can pay with EFW or Electronic Fund Withdrawal, which is the option offered when you e-file your federal taxes with the use of IRS authorized preparation software, like ExpressTruckTax, or through a tax professional.

With EFW you enter in your bank account information to the IRS’s safe and secure payment system and the tax amount you owe is withdrawn from your bank account usually within 24 to 48 hours of submitting your payment.

Another payment option you have is to pay with the EFTPS or Electronic Federal Tax Payment System. If you select that option you will be taken to the EFTPS site. EFTPS is the free safe and secure payment system that’s offered by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

To use the EFTPS you will need to create a free account, enter your bank account information, and verify it because this payment system works by withdrawing the funds you owe from your bank account.

Also, you have the 3rd option of mailing a check or money order to the IRS directly. Just make sure that the check or money order is payable to the U.S. Treasury and includes your name, address, EIN, “IRS form 2290”, and the date. Do not send cash.

If you choose to send a check or money order you’ll need to print the payment voucher 2290 -V, or page 5 of your 2290 and include it with your payment. Don’t staple your payment to your form 2990 or payment voucher.

Send Your Payment and voucher to:

Internal Revenue Service,
P.O. Box 804525,
Cincinnati,
OH 45280-4525.

Three Easy Ways to Pay Your HVUT

Gathering the funds to pay your HVUT each year is headache enough! Sending those funds to the IRS should be the easy part.

That’s why ExpressTruckTax has gone above and beyond to make paying your heavy vehicle use taxes easy. We offer three ways to pay your taxes, and no matter which one you choose, rest assured that we’ve made it quick and simple.

Here’s the lowdown on each payment method. Choose whichever is most convenient for you!

Direct Debit

  • Also known as EFW (Electronic Funds Withdrawal), this is the fastest, easiest way to pay your HVUT, and you can only do it if you E-file!
  • EFW means the IRS will initiate a direct debit from your bank account. In order to do this, they’ll need your bank routing number and account number. Both can be located along the bottom of one of your checks.
  • When paying with direct debit, the IRS will not process your return on a weekend or holiday, but on the next business day. For immediate processing of your return, pay by Check or Money Order (see below).

EFTPS

  • The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System may be a mouthful, but it’s another free and convenient way to pay your HVUT.
  • A free service provided by the US Dept. of the Treasury, you must register with this system 5-7 business days prior to your first payment. Register for free by visiting http://www.eftps.gov or by calling 1-800-555-4477. When you enroll, be sure to have your EIN, bank account, bank routing number, and address and name as they appear on IRS documents.
  • What’s so cool about EFTPS? You can schedule a business payment up to 120 days in advance. But keep in mind that you can’t schedule same-day payments. So be sure to schedule at least 1 business day prior to your tax due date!

Check or Money Order

  • This is the only way to pay if you need your stamped Schedule 1 on a weekend or holiday.
  • When paying by check or money order, you must submit a completed 2290-V Payment Voucher. Here’s the good news. ExpressTruckTax creates one for you! It’s page 5 of your completed 2290. Just detach the bottom portion, paper clip to your payment (do not staple them together!), and mail. How easy was that?!
  • “Where do I mail it to,” you ask? (Yes, I can hear your thoughts!) Instructions are on your voucher, but for the sake of convenience, here’s the address:
    Internal Revenue Service,
    P.O. Box 804525,
    Cincinnati, OH 45280-4525

You’ll notice that a credit card is not one of the available payment options. That’s because the IRS no longer accepts tax payments via credit card. You will, however, need a credit card when E-filing to pay our $9.90 E-filing fee, so keep your card on hand!

Of course, if you need any assistance on the payment page, or along any other step of your E-filing journey, just reach out to our support team! They can help you choose which payment option suits you best. Just call 704.234.6005 or for 24/7 assistance email support@expresstrucktax.com.

Why you need to file IRS Form 2290(Federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Return)

To file your HVUT with the IRS using Form 2290, it is very important that you keep accurate records, just like you would when filing any other type of tax return. It is crucial for anyone filing form 2290 to maintain their records for at least the prior 3 years for any taxable highway vehicles registered to them. For fleet owners and small trucking companies who have filed form 2290 in the past, it is wise to always keep the 2290 records on hand, as one never knows when IRS inspection may take place. It is even important to save these returns if they are only for a part of a year. In the case of a suspended vehicle (public highway use was less than 5,000 miles/year) it is still necessary to keep records of Form 2290’s filed for them as well.

You will need to gather the following information before filing form 2290 to accelerate the filing process.  You will need a description of all vehicles for which you are filing as well as a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) for each one. You will also need to know the gross taxable weight of the vehicle.  It is also necessary to report the date the vehicle was acquired, as well as the name and address of the previous owner. The fist use month for the taxable period is also required for reporting. If a vehicle is considered to be suspended, keep a record of actual highway mileage. If the vehicle is an agricultural vehicle, then keep accurate records of the number of miles it is driven on a farm or field.

Keeping proper records of your 2290 information will be a great help to you in the unfortunate event of an audit.  It will also make the task of filing this form much easier.

ExpressTruckTax.com is an IRS authorized E-File provider who can help you file form 2290 as well as keep secure online records of previously filed form 2290’s. For more information on the 2290 filing process, heavy vehicle use tax, IRS payment methods, etc visit the Express Truck Tax website or call our Truck Tax experts at 704-234-6005. You can also email any questions to support@ExpressTruckTax.com.

What Do I Need to E-File IRS Form 2290?

As you may know, it is now possible to E-File your 2290 from your own computer quickly, easily, and securely.

If you have not ever E-Filed a tax return before, there is no need to worry. The E-Filing process is actually easier than paper filing. There have also been a few changes this year in the filing process.  The IRS will no longer be mailing out paper forms to drivers.  This a very significant change, because you will not be able to rely on the IRS to send you the Form to remind you to file. This year, no one will receive that form via postal mail.  The IRS Form 2290 is due between July 1, 2011 – August 31, 2011.  If you E-File with ExpressTruckTax.com you will receive email reminders each yearso that we can keep you informed even though the IRS may not.

Expected delay for filing IRS Form 2290(2011-12)

The annual filing season of IRS Form 2290 for 2011-12 may be delayed.  IRS will not accept any paper format or e-filing at this time. An announcement on when it will be in place is expected to be made by IRS.

A meeting was conducted by IRS regarding the extension of time for tax filings for Form 2290.  Right now, the tax legislation is tied up in Congress. A new legislation need to be passed before IRS can collect the 2011-12 Form 2290 tax for the entire year.
Normal tax filing is not going to happen because of issues within the congress. IRS may wait as long as possible so that a single tax return is all that will be necessary for the 2011-12 tax Year. However a backup plan is in place so that a 3 month tax (July, August and September) can be collected by August 31st filing deadline. When the new legislation is passed, it will determine what happens for the reminder of the 2011/12 tax year.
