Tomorrow is the Deadline to File Form 2290

Tomorrow is the Deadline to File Form 2290 Whoa, it’s time to get moving! Your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290 is due tomorrow, August 31 at midnight. The deadline is here! That means you’re literally running out of time to file without facing major penalties.

This little piece of news might send you straight to panic mode, but try and stay calm. You can file Form 2290 in a matter of minutes with ExpressTruckTax. Plus, to help you file even faster, we have put together a list of frequently asked questions and provided the answers.

HVUT Form 2290 FAQs

1. What is my first use month?
Your first use month is the first month that you use your heavy vehicle during the tax period. The current HVUT period runs from July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019. So if you were driving your current rig this time last year you are required to file by tomorrow’s HVUT deadline.

However, if you purchased a new rig during the previous tax year, you will need to base your due date on your first used month.

2. Can I pay the amount of HVUT I owe with a credit card?
Absolutely! Starting this truck tax season, the IRS is now allowing you to pay 2290 with credit card or debit! Or another option is to pay with direct debit or electronic funds withdrawal, by authorizing the IRS to debit the amount you owe from your bank account. To do this, you will need to provide your bank account and routing number, which can be found on one of your checks.

Or you can also pay with the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System, where you will create a free account at www.ettps.gov. The amount you owe will be debited from your bank account, but it could take up to 10 days to create your account.

If you want to, you can mail the amount you owe directly to the IRS with a check or money order. Just print your completed 2290-V (your payment voucher) from page 11 of your completed 2290 form and mail it with your payment.

3. What is an EIN?
Your EIN is your Employer Identification Number, and it’s used to identify a business entity. To complete Form 2290, you need an EIN and can apply for one online with the IRS. If you already have an EIN, it can be found on a previous stamped Schedule 1.

You cannot use your Social Security Number in place of your EIN on HVUT Form 2290. If you use your SSN instead of your EIN, your form will be rejected. If you need an EIN, you better hop to it because it takes about 14 days for your EIN to become active in the IRS’s system and your form could get rejected during that time.

4. How Do I file?
It’s easy! Choose Express Truck Tax and follow the step-by-step e-filing guide to complete your form in 5 minutes or less. As a result, you will receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 within a few minutes via email.

The Most Common Reasons For Form 2290 Rejections

The Most Common Reasons For Form 2290 Rejections

The HVUT deadline is racing towards us at full speed! Friday, August 31st is the last day to file without IRS penalties and interest! While you might be tempted to wait until the last minute, it’s important to give yourself enough time to file your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax 2290 Forms. If your form is rejected, then it’s up to you to correct it and retransmit it to the IRS in time; otherwise, you will still face late filing penalties.

Why 2290 Forms Are Commonly Rejected

So why wait? Go ahead and use ExpressTruckTax to quickly and conveniently knock out your IRS Form 2290 today. As a bonus, use the following tips about why 2290 forms are commonly rejected to get yours accepted the first time.

EIN Problems

You need an EIN or Employer Identification Number to complete your IRS Form 2290. There’s no way around it. If you use your SSN (Social Security Number) in place of your EIN when you file Form 2290, it will be rejected instantly.

Duplicated IRS Form 2290

Your rig’s VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) can only be filed for once during the HVUT tax period. Duplicates will be rejected, so make sure that you’re filing for the current tax period which runs from July 1st, 2018 to June 30th, 2019. If you accidentally filed for the previous tax period then that could be why your form is considered a duplicate.

You also need to make sure that you enter your VIN correctly. If it’s one character off, then your form could get rejected. If your form is rejected for this reason don’t panic, you can quickly and easily file free VIN corrections with ExpressTruckTax.

RTN Errors

You can pay the amount of HVUT you owe to the IRS through direct debit or electronic funds withdrawal, and that process involves providing your bank account number and RTN (Routing Transfer Number).

If you enter this information with as little as one character off, the IRS will not be able to debit the funds, and your form will be rejected. This is also the case if you do not have enough funds in your account to cover the full amount.

Enter your information, which can be found on one of your checks, correctly. If your form is rejected for an incorrect RTN or insufficient funds you will need to edit your form and retransmit it or choose a different payment method.

All About Your HVUT Form 2290

So what exactly is the HVUT Form 2290? It is the tax assessed on the use of public highways by heavy vehicles with gross weights of 55,000 pounds or more. The truck tax collected is used to repair, maintain, and build public highways.

If a taxable highway motor vehicle is registered in your name in the United States, the District of Columbia, Canada, or Mexico you must file an HVUT Form 2290.

A taxable highway motor vehicle is any vehicle with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more and includes any self-propelled vehicle designed to carry loads over public highways, regardless if it’s designed to perform other functions. A taxable vehicle consists of a chassis or a chassis and a body but does not include the load.

The current HVUT tax period began on July 1, 2018, and will end on June 30, 2019. The HVUT is based on your first use month and is due by the last day of the month following the first use month.

For example, if you first use your truck in October, then your Form 2290 will be due by November 30th. However, if your current vehicle was in use during the previous tax year, you are required to file by the August 31st deadline.

Attention Truckers! Your IRS Form 2290 is Due FridayOnce you file Form 2290, you will receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 which serves as your proof of payment for your truck tax. It actually has a digital watermark stamp that includes the time that the IRS approved and accepted your IRS Form 2290. To remain operational, you are required to have a stamped Schedule 1. You will need it to register any new vehicles and to renew your current vehicle tags. Without it, you will be operating illegally.

Luckily when you file Form 2290 with ExpressTruckTax is quick and easy. All you need to file is your business name, address, and EIN (Employer Identification Number). For your vehicles, you need the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and taxable gross weight.

You cannot use your SSN (Social Security Number) in place of an EIN. If you use your SSN to file your HVUT Form 2290, it will be rejected by the IRS.

You Need to Know About Vehicle Type For Form 2290 Filing

You Need to Know About Vehicle Type For Form 2290 FilingWith the Form 2290 due date coming up fast, ExpressTruckTax is here to help with tips about the filing process, and where you can save money. We don’t want you paying more than you have to. Today we are looking at the different vehicle types for Form 2290 filing. Some vehicle types are subject to lower tax rates, credits, or could exempt you from the heavy use tax altogether.

Before we get into the different 2290 vehicle types you can file with ExpressTruckTax, let’s review who must file the heavy use tax. If you own and operate a heavy vehicle 55,000 Ibs or more in gross weight, you are required to receive a stamped Schedule 1 after Form 2290 filing. Your gross weight is the total weight of your vehicle unloaded. However, this will include any equipment or accessories you typically use on a haul.

Vehicles that qualify for the heavy highway use tax include any self-propelled vehicles that are designed to carry loads on public highways, regardless of their possible other functions. An example of other functions could consist of carrying special goods/supplies, passengers, or permanently mounted equipment.

Logging Vehicle

You might confuse the term “logging vehicle’ with an ELD, however, for Form 2290 filing purposes these vehicles are used to … well… haul logs. So if your vehicle is used to haul wood or other products from the forest, it could classify, and this is important because you can receive a reduced tax rate.

Ensure you are paying the correct tax amount by checking the IRS criteria for logging vehicles:
Your truck is exclusively used to transport material harvested from a forested site, or your vehicle is used solely to transport harvested materials from one forested location to another forested place. If your truck runs between forested sites, it can use public highways in between those sites and still be considered a logging vehicle.

AND

Your vehicle is registered in your base state (or any other state in which it is required to be registered) as a highway motor vehicle used exclusively for the transport of harvested materials from a forested site. Although the truck must be registered as a “logging vehicle” in your state, no special tag or license plate is required to identify the vehicle as a logging vehicle.

Harvested Material:
According to the IRS guidelines, harvested products can include any raw timber taken from a forest, OR any timber that has been processed on the forested site for commercial processes, meaning the timber has already been sawed into lumber, chipped, or milled in some way.

Agricultural Vehicles

Vehicles typically required to file the road tax 2290 are those with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 Ibs and travel over 5,000 miles on public highways through the current tax period. However, to give farmers and suppliers a break, the IRS requirements are slightly more lenient for vehicles used to transport agricultural products. Those vehicles that qualify regardless of their weight are allowed to drive up to 7,500 miles on public highways each tax period before having to pay the heavy highway use tax.

However, this does not exempt any vehicles from Form 2290 filing. If your vehicle’s gross weight exceeds 55,000 Ibs, you will still need to receive a stamped Schedule 1 Form 2290.

Ensure you are paying the correct tax amount by checking the IRS criteria for agricultural vehicles:
The vehicle is used primarily for farming purposes throughout the tax year. However, what does the IRS consider “primarily for farming purposes”? It’s quite simple. More than half of the vehicle’s total mileage for the year must be used for farming purposes. Also, a farming purpose, according to the IRS, is any activity that contributes to the conduct of a farm. This can include activities such as transporting goods to and from a farm (goods like livestock, produce, animal feed, fertilizer, etc.), direct use in agricultural production, or just performing work around the farm like repairing fences, building irrigation ditches, clearing land, etc.

AND

The vehicle is registered as an agricultural vehicle in your state. Although your vehicle must be registered as such, no special license plates or tags marked “agriculture” are required to maintain your status as an agricultural vehicle. If your vehicle meets both of these requirements above, then you can file as an agricultural vehicle with a higher mileage limit.

If you file your agricultural vehicle as a Suspended (Category W) at the beginning of the tax period but then exceed the 7,500-mile limit, you will need to submit a Form 2290 Amendment for a Milage Increase. The Form 2290 Amendment is due by the end of the month following the month you exceeded the mileage limit. After filing the Amendment, the IRS will prorate your heavy highway use tax for the remaining months of the tax year. This means that even though you will owe some tax, it will not be for the full amount you would have owed.

Suspended Vehicles

You Need to Know About Vehicle Type For Form 2290 Filing

A suspended or credit vehicle is a highway motor vehicle that is expected to travel 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles or less for agricultural vehicles) during the tax period. This mileage limit applies to the total amount of miles it’s driven on the road, regardless of the number of owners.

Other suspended or credited vehicles include those that were sold, destroyed, or stolen and they must all be reported on your 2290. If they exceed the mileage limit during the tax period, then you’ll owe HVUT for them.

When you e-file your IRS Form 2290 with ExpressTruckTax we will auto-generate Form 8849 so you can claim a refund or credit on the amount you paid to the IRS for these vehicles.

Exempt Vehicles

Vehicles that are exempt from the HVUT don’t need to be filed for, regardless of how many miles they travel. They’re 100% exempt from the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax! A few HVUT exempt vehicles include qualified blood collector vehicles, mobile machinery used for non-transportation purposes, heavy vehicles used by the federal government, and more.

When is The Form 2290 Due Date?

You must complete your Form 2290 filing by the last day of the month following the first use month during the current tax year. The typical trucking tax year is July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019. If your tax period stated in July of last year your Schedule 1 Form 2290 will be due on August 31st.

How to E-File Form 2290 Online?

After signing up for your free ExpressTruckTax account, you will enter the necessary information for your business like the name, address, and EIN (Employer Identification Number).

You will need information about your heavy vehicles to complete your IRS Form 2290, such as its WIN or Vehicle Identification Number and taxable gross weight. Remember that suspended vehicles must be included.

A suspended vehicle is one that is exempt from HVUT taxes for the current tax season. Vehicles with less than 5,000 miles are exempt, along with agricultural vehicles with less than 7,500 miles. When you’ve finished entering your information we will automatically calculate the amount of HVUT you owe, and you can pay the IRS with credit/debit, direct debit, electronic funds withdrawal, EFTP, check, or money order.

Then you will be presented with a summary of your IRS Form 2290 to make sure you have entered everything correctly, and we will perform an instant error check. Once you have corrected any mistakes, your IRS Form 2290 will be ready for submission. It will remain in our encrypted system until it is transmitted to the IRS on July 1st.
