What is an Employer Identification Number (EIN)?

An EIN is also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, and is used to identify a business entity. To file form 2290, the IRS requires an EIN. You can apply online with the IRS to receive your EIN.

  • Name Control: A name control is a sequence of characters derived from a taxpayer’s name that is used by IRS in processing their return. It’s important that your Name Control and Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) match what the IRS has on file. A name control is established by the IRS when the taxpayer requests an Employer Identification Number (EIN).
  • You can call the IRS to verify your Name Control by contacting the Business & Specialty Help Line at 1-800-829-4933
  • If you have recently applied for and received your EIN from the IRS, keep in mind that it takes about 15 days to be entered in the e-file system. The IRS will reject Form 2290s during this time.
  • The IRS mails an information package to users about IRS 2290 filing and the tax period. This notice includes the Name Control for your business.
